With a history that spans over a century, pipelines have evolved to become the most common mode of transportation over long distances for crude oil, refined oil, and natural gas. Indeed, over the years, pipelines haven't only got longer and wider. The infrastructure supporting their operations has also become much more complex, with a growing number of branches and increasing automation. As such, communication systems for pipelines have to become more intelligent to keep up with rapid change.
However, with sparsely distributed sites, heterogeneous devices, and diversified services, implementing a secure and reliable communication system for pipelines is far from easy. Nevertheless, in order to promote all-round automation and digitalization in the industry, a large-capacity communication system that supports long-haul transmission and multi-service bearing capabilities is now required.
Based on optical slicing technology, Huawei's Optical Network Solution implements a high bandwidth bearer network characterized by high security and high reliability. Such a network efficiently carries production network services, from Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) and dispatch and command, as well as office services including Office Automation (OA), voice, and videoconferencing.
System monitoring, security monitoring, dispatch and command, and office services are all carried over hard pipes for physical isolation, while Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and L1 Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)-256 ensure secure signal transmission.
Protection schemes at board, device, network, and service levels, with an Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) protecting services against multiple fiber cuts, achieving above 99.999% reliability. End to End (E2E) online services, OD/FD intelligent visualization, and proactive Operations and Maintenance (O&M) ensure high network performance.
4-in-1 Multi-Service Optical Transport Network (MS-OTN) devices support unified access of diverse services, reducing O&M costs and complexity, and providing future-proofed bandwidth of 48 Tbit/s per fiber. An ultra-long single span of 450 km is supported, with up to 6000 km of 100G transmission without electrical regeneration.
