Hong Kong, China, December 17, 2013–Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) provider, today presented its excellent storage progress at the OpenStack 2013 Summit Hong Kong. Regarding the storage field, over 10 OpenStack core open-source developers and a hundred OpenStack solution developers have been constantly contributing their wisdom to the OpenStack open source project.
With the gradual convergence of IT and CT as well as the emergence of cloud computing technology, IT has become an important part of Huawei's development strategy. The company is gradually transitioning from a CT vendor to comprehensive converged ICT infrastructure solutions provider. As the most influential open-source project in the cloud computing era, OpenStack has been attracting Huawei's intensive attention from the outset. The OpenStack cloud platform can be categorized into three groups by resource type: computing, network, and storage. Each category is an independent project that consists of one or multiple modules. On October 23, 2012, Huawei announced its accession to the OpenStack Foundation. When the grizzly version was released in April 2013, Huawei storage products started to support the OpenStack architecture. In adherence to openness and convergence, Huawei has expanded the categories of storage products supporting the OpenStack architecture, providing a wider range of options for OpenStack users. Huawei is the first Chinese storage vendor that supports OpenStack and one of the most dynamic storage vendors among OpenStack members.
Mr. Fan Ruiqi, President of Huawei Storage Product Line, remarked, "Huawei Storage Product Line keeps investing in OpenStack, constantly pushing forward OpenStack's development in the storage field."As of now, Huawei Storage Product Line has contributed over 10 thousand lines of codes to OpenStack and made substation progress, including:
As of the time when the H version of OpenStack was released, Huawei provided a full series of OpenStack-supporting high-performance storage products from entry level to high end. The products support both iSCSI and Fibre Channel networks, giving users a variety of choices.
OpenStack users were troubled with creating snapshots for virtual machines (VMs) on OpenStack, because the creation usually took over ten minutes or even dozens of minutes. Huawei now provides highly efficient snapshot technology that reduces the window from over ten minutes to a few seconds, significantly improving the efficiency of taking VM snapshots.
Huawei sticks to independent R&D and constant innovation in the storage field. Huawei's SmartTier software, combined with OpenStack, can automatically identify hotspot data and create different tiers to store data with varied access frequencies, improving storage performance and reducing overall costs. The SmartQoS software works with OpenStack to dynamically allocate storage resources based on capacity and bandwidth requirements, ensuring service quality.
With a consistently open and cooperative mindset, Huawei is actively promoting the development of OpenStack with industrial partners, delivering a variety of choices to help users quickly adapt to IT changes.
