Huawei GSM-R Supports Successful Speed Increment of the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railways — Significantly Enhances Railway Communications Efficiency and Reduces Travel Time

Shanghai, China, May 2, 2013 - Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced that its GSM-Railway (GSM-R) solution was one of the contributors to the successful speed increment of the Harbin-Dalian High-speed Railway, boosting the speed to 300 kilometers per hour. This speed increase, introduced after five months of stable passenger operation since December, is a demonstration of the reliability, safety and efficiency Huawei’s GSM-R solution has brought to the railway.

Measuring 921 km in length, the Harbin-Dalian High-speed Railway runs through provinces which experience China’s coldest, longest and most snow-bound winters, and has overcome significant technical challenges to ensure stable operation and reliable communications in the extreme weather of Northeast China. Since December 2012, the railway safely operated through a winter season that saw multiple snowstorms and long periods of ice and frost. Built on Huawei’s latest innovations and extensive experience in transport communications technologies, the GSM-R wireless railway communication solution creates a completely digital network for voice and data transmission between multiple parties on the trains and offsite, enabling real-time exchange of information and facilitating efficient control along the entire route. With the support of Huawei's cutting-edge GSM-R railway communications solution, the speed of the trains has been increased to up to 300 kilometers per hour, significantly reducing passengers' travel time.

Since the rail line officially commenced commercial operation in December 2012, Huawei has closely monitored the performance of the GSM-R system. A service team of GSM-R technical experts has been appointed onsite to ensure quick response for any technical challenges encountered. With strong and comprehensive technical capabilities, Huawei’s GSM-R solution guarantees reliable performance on high-speed trains, laying an important foundation for Harbin-Dalian Railway’s speed increment.

Huawei has over 20 years of experience in the research and development of wireless network equipment and established the industry's largest and most professional reliability laboratory to conduct comprehensive tests on products to ensure reliable performance under harsh environments. The GSM-R solution deployed by Harbin-Dalian Railway effectively addresses the communications needs of the railway's CTCS-3 train control system, a core technology that ensures the safety and efficiency of high-speed trains, while a series of other measures were also undertaken to enhance operational reliability and guarantee service continuity under extreme environments, including the MSC dual-homing feature and some special algorithms for high-speed scenarios.

Huawei also leveraged its distributed base station technology to address the challenge of frequency planning and design at crossroads and lane-change areas where frequency interference and communication interruption might often occur. Through the use of this advanced technology, Huawei's GSM-R solution successfully simplified the frequency planning, expanded cell coverage and reduced the cell handover rate, further enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the communications along the Harbin-Dalian railway line.
