Huawei Launches SSD Servers

Shanghai, China, April 2, 2013 – Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced the launch of solid-state drive (SSD) servers in cooperation with Intel. The SSD servers use new-generation Intel SSDs, which solves storage bottlenecks, improves server performance, and enables real-time access in massive data for users.

The rapid development of cloud computing, big data, HPC, and other data center applications boosts requirements for real-time data access. For enterprises that are sensitive to market trends, data is the service itself. Besides the challenge of big data, the other challenge is the requirements for real-time access to the big data. To balance requirements of big data and real-time access and provide optimal server performance, Huawei released the solution with SSD servers.

General Manager of Huawei Servers Mr. Qiu Long remarked that:"Computer technologies are making breakthroughs, and the new advanced technologies help enhance computer performance and improve user experience. Because of the rapid read speed and channel locating, the SSDs, as the system disks, shorten the time for startup and program loading. As the primary system storage devices, the SSDs store hot data such as data indexes, frequently accessed data lists or temporary storage areas, and log files, greatly improving system operating efficiency. To meet requirements of high IOPS for core applications, such as database applications, the PCIe SSD cards are used to achieve high IOPS and low latency. Huawei SSD servers successfully solve the bottlenecks of data transmission and speed limits of traditional hard disks, and the accelerated storage performance increases storage throughput for concurrent multithreaded computing. This shortens application response time and provides smooth user experience."

Huawei SSD servers provide the following features:

  • Superb performance to enrich service applications

Uses two Intel® Xeon® TM E5-2600 series processors. Each processor has eight cores and a 20 MB L3 cache and supports intelligent power adjustment, providing excellent performance and energy efficiency.
Provides 24 DIMMs with up to 768 GB memory capacity, supporting flexible configurations based on service requirements and enabling optimal service performance.

  • Flexible scalability for application acceleration

Provides up to six PCIe slots, facilitating high-availability I/O expansion and improving storage and network I/O performance for application acceleration.
Supports high-performance GPU cards, improving the graphics processing and floating-point computing performances.

  • Reliable high-speed SSD storage

Supports up to eight Intel® SSD DC S3700 series SSDs, providing 75,000 IOPS for random read performance at 4 KB and 36,000 IOPS for random write performance at 4 KB to meet requirements of I/O-sensitive applications. Meanwhile, the total power consumption of an SSD server is decreased by up to 60 W, reducing energy and cooling costs thanks to the reduced heat.

  • Intelligent energy consumption management improving energy efficiency

Uses 80 Plus Gold PSUs that comply with the ENERGY STAR standards and have passed the China Energy Conservation and Environmentally-Friendly Certification. The power conversion efficiency reaches above 92%.
Uses sensors for key components to monitor the server heat in real time, and the server dynamically adjusts the fan speed for better heat dissipation, which ensures the normal server operating.
