Huawei’s Digital Railway Solution Helps World First Alpine CTCS L3 High-Speed Line to Go Into Passenger Operation

[Shenzhen, China, 2 December, 2012] Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that the Harbin-Dalian CTCS L3 high-speed line has been successfully opened for passenger operation.

The Harbin-Dalian high-speed railway is operated using Huawei’s feature rich GSM-R system connecting China’s major northeastern cities of Harbin and Dalian. The high-speed rail line provides passenger services in a challenging permafrost, high-altitude environment. In order to ensure the highest standards in rail safety and reliability, the 921km long high-speed line is covered with Huawei’s GSM-R radio system and integrated with a CTCS L3 solution supplied by a marked-leading European signaling supplier allowing train speeds of up to 350km per hour. CTCS L3 (Chinese Train Control System, CTCS) is recognized as a signaling solution that is fully coherent to the ETCS L2 (European Train Control System, ETCS) solution predominantly used in Europe (ERTMS).

Rolling out and operating the GSM-R – CTCS L3 system in the northeast winter has been a demanding task for the multi-vendor delivery team. With long winters, cold climate with temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius the line has been put into passenger operation right in time for the festive season.

Huawei’s market renowned redundancy solutions such as geo-redundant MSC’s, duo-location BSC’s, double radio coverage and the use of Distributed BTS technology helped meet the customer’s demanding requirements on reliability and safety.

The successful implementation of Huawei’s highly reliable digital railway solution in the Harbin-Dalian High-speed railway laid a solid foundation for the Harbin and Shenyang Railway Bureaus. With this latest achievement Huawei is demonstrating again how its converged ICT solutions provide “A Better Way” to enhance railway customers’ operational safety and help improve operational efficiency by applying modern communication technologies.
