Brazilian research and education network RNP and Chinese technology firm Huawei have signed a letter of intent to donate equipment for cloud infrastructure, the science and technology and innovation ministry (MCT ) said in a statement.

The agreement is the result of an offer made by Huawei during President Dilma Rousseff's visit to China last April, and provides for the donation of data centers with high storage capacity.

RNP, part of MCT, will be in charge of planning and managing the data centers, according to the ministry.

Once the data centers have been connected to the national education network, the equipment will be used in a cloud-based storage and computing infrastructure to support education and research applications.

The equipment will be installed in Recife, capital of Pernambuco state, and Manaus, capital of Amazonas state.

According to RNP general director Nelson Simões, the network already has high performance centers such as the national scientific computing laboratory.

"These [new] centers will be added to the existing capacity in Brazil to enable new applications. This is very important, especially for those groups who are demanding ever greater capacity for their research," he said.

RNP has 27 points of presence - one in each of Brazil's 26 states and one in the Federal District. It connects 15 state networks and more than 600 institutions.
