[Barcelona, Spain, March 4, 2025] At MWC Barcelona 2025, Huawei introduced the StarryLink optical modules, aimed at creating a network experience with "3S" quality (Spanning, Stable, Secure). This launch took place during the data center session themed "Building New Data Centers in the Intelligent Era," focusing on accelerating enterprise digital transformation. The event attracted over 100 customers and partners from Spain, France, Brazil, South Africa, and many more, all eager to discuss trends and innovations in the data center network realm, as well as infrastructure upgrades and service innovations.
Huawei StarryLink Optical Module Launch Ceremony
As AI development surges, training models are evolving to trillions of parameters. This trend is driving upgrades in switching capacity and leading to the evolution of data center switches with larger capacities. To support the efficient interconnection of these high-capacity switches, optical modules must advance from a single lane of 56 Gbit/s to 112 Gbit/s. However, this evolution faces several technical challenges:
• Transmission distance: As data centers grow in scale, interconnection optical modules must support longer transmission distances.
• Reliability: Issues such as optical module failures, contamination, and fiber optic failures are becoming increasingly prominent.
• Security: Exposed optical fibers during cross-equipment room interconnections pose risks of sensitive data exposure.
To tackle these challenges, Huawei has launched its StarryLink optical modules for data center networks, featuring three robust capabilities: spanning, stable, and secure, delivering a "3S" high-quality network experience for enterprises.
• Spanning: Huawei employs a unique optical path coupling algorithm and advanced optical design to optimize signal power distribution, ensuring maximum transmission power. This achieves transmission distances that are double the industry average.
• Stable: Huawei's proprietary short-distance optical return loss positioning technology allows for fault detection on optical links in minutes, significantly quicker than the industry average of three hours. Additionally, the exclusive channel loss resistance technology enables continuous training even in the event of link disconnection, improving reliability tenfold.
• Secure: The exclusive PHYSEC physical layer encryption capability is integrated into the optical module's oDSP, ensuring 100% encryption of all packets and eliminating any risk of data leakage.
Arthur Wang, President of Data Center Network Domain, Huawei Data Communication Product Line, stated at the launch: "Amid the rapid advancement of AI, training models are scaling towards trillions of parameters. Our latest StarryLink optical module exemplifies our dedication to technological innovation, delivering high-performance, short-range optical solutions for seamless interconnection. These modules are designed to offer ultra-long distance transmission, ultra-high reliability, and ultra-solid security, ensuring customers experience an ultimate network performance with "3S" quality."
Looking ahead, Huawei plans to collaborate with industry partners to further research and innovate in data center network optical modules, promoting intelligent network upgrades and generational evolution to create greater value for customers and the industry.
