Huawei Unveils an Industrial Optical Communication Solution at CIPC to Safeguard Efficient Pipeline Operations

Apr 12, 2023

[China, Beijing, April 12, 2023] The China International Pipeline Conference (CIPC) provides an international platform for global oil and gas storage and transportation players to deepen exchanges and cooperation, showcase innovations, and pursue common development goals. As this year's CIPC officially kicked off in Beijing today, experts and academia from around the world gathered in the Chinese capital to explore future development avenues for oil and gas pipeline technologies in the new era. Huawei also set up an exhibition booth themed 'Digital Smart Energy, Creating New Value Together' and launched an industrial optical communication solution at the event, a sign of Huawei's latest exploration and practice in helping the oil and gas industry go digital.

CIPC Opening Ceremony

Li Yangming, CTO of Huawei's Oil and Gas Sector, delivered a keynote speech titled " Thrive with Digital, Striding Towards an Intelligent World of Oil and Gas Pipeline ". In the speech, Li explored how pipeline companies can grow their business and achieve sustainable development while ensuring long-term, stable oil and gas supply and addressing the challenges of energy transition. Innovative digital technologies have become a key driver for the industry's transformation, and for some companies the value of digital productivity has already materialized, as more and more businesses embrace digitalization. Li also shared the joint exploration and innovation practices of PipeChina and Huawei in consulting and digital platform construction, such as building a digital smart low-carbon campus, the pilot project of pipeline fiber warning, and construction of unmanned stations and a safe operations management platform. These efforts help PipeChina to accelerate its digital transformation and maintain high-quality development.

The pipeline valve station plays an important role in long-distance oil and gas pipeline transportation. Located in remote areas, most valve stations are plagued by problems such as an unstable and long communication distance, difficult O&M, power disruptions, coexistence of multiple networks and lack of unified standards. These disadvantages have a negative impact on production data collection, security isolation and transmission, and the issuance of control commands, complicating oil and gas pipeline management with higher risks.

To address such challenges, Huawei released the industry's first ultra-low-power consumption, industrial-grade OSU CPE — Huawei OptiXstar E810. Based on the OptiXstar E810, Huawei developed an industrial optical communication solution to meet the requirements of oil and gas valve stations for industrial control, data collection and backhaul. Huawei's OptiXstar E810 boasts three technological innovations:

High security and reliability based on native hard pipes (NHP): Based on the fifth-generation NHP technology, the optical service unit (OSU) supports port-level physical isolation for NHPs, achieving zero interference between SCADA, voice, video conference, industrial TV, and perimeter security services and ensuring the secure and reliable transmission of production services.

High wide-temperature adaptability and low carbon: Huawei OptiXstar E810 supports a wide temperature range from -40°C to 65°C, adapting to complex environments such as extreme temperatures and high humidity. Solar panels provide a stable power supply as the energy consumption of the product is less than 40W, and the power consumption of the valve station is minimized to save energy.

Smooth evolution and easy management: Smooth interconnection is enabled with the SDH devices on the existing network, with a port rate up to 2.5 Gbit/s. Physical isolation of SDH and OSUs is supported, enabling multiple services to be carried on one network. Unified E2E service planning, provisioning, and maintenance improve network management efficiency.

Looking to the future, Huawei will continue to innovate and lead the construction of the digital foundation for the oil and gas industry. Together, we will usher in a safe, efficient, smart, and green future for the industry.
