Bela-Pharm Secures Pharmaceutical Production with Future-proof Campus Network

Background

Bela-Pharm manufactures and distributes medicines, vaccines, disinfectants and feed supplements worldwide. The family-run business based in Vechta, Lower Saxony, is also a contract manufacturer for national and international pharmaceutical companies and supplies large veterinary practices. State-of-the-art production facilities with large-scale processes for cost-effective drug production and quality controls using the latest analytical methods are the key to developing innovative products.

Challenge

As a pharmaceutical company specialising in veterinary medicine, Bela-Pharm must meet the requirements of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), among others. Production facilities, manufacturing processes and control mechanisms ensure compliance with the required quality standards. The company's own campus network is not only needed for production control. All company hardware with network or WLAN cards is integrated, such as devices for order picking in the warehouse, tablets in production and workstation computers. The servers in the data centre are also integrated into the network, as are all access points and other systems such as air conditioning systems. Yet, the existing campus network had reached end-of-support.

“When manufacturing medicines, whether for humans or animals, you need to have every step of the process under control,” says Frank Rosenkranz, Managing Director of Uzuner Systems. The IT system house based in Bremen was responsible for installing and commissioning the new network. “Data from temperature sensors and humidity sensors, or the dosage of the individual recipe components for the medicines, must be logged. A smoothly running network is essential for this.”

Solution

Uzuner recommended Huawei network switches to bring the company's network up to the latest standards. The technicians replaced both the core and access layers. Uzuner installed Huawei's large CloudEngine 6863 series cloud switches and several S5732-H Multi-GE switches. Additional S5731-L series RU switches for installation at the workplace round out the package.

Benefits

Huawei switches reduce the effort required to connect wired devices and offer PoE (Power over Ethernet) functions for devices in the live network to improve access bandwidth. The switches are also future-proof: their ports can be upgraded to up to ten gigabits via software licence. This means that they will also be able to support future Wi-Fi 7 devices, for example. And every connected user can utilise the full bandwidth, even over the air. “This opens up completely new possibilities for scaling,” says Rosenkranz. “There's no need to remove switches from the rack and rewire them: the desired block receives a licence upgrade and higher speeds are immediately available.”
