Huawei's Education Backbone OTN Solution Helps Brazil's RNP Build a Nationwide Beyond 100G Education and Research Network


[Hannover, Germany, June 22, 2018] Huawei and Brazil's RNP discussed the development trends and emerging requirements of their nationwide education and research network at CEBIT 2018, the world's largest international consumer electronics and communications expo where industries leaders and organizations can collaborate and connect. Huawei and Brazil’s RNP are currently working together on a nationwide beyond 100G network in Brazil, and so they shared their success stories in network deployment with the expo.

The Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa; RNP), was founded in 1989 and is a non-profit non-governmental organization funded by the Brazilian Ministries of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC), Education (MEC), Culture (MinC), and Health (MS). The RNP provides network connections, value-added services, and SC&T services for scientific research institutes, higher education institutions, governmental organizations, and public hospitals in Brazil. It has benefited over 1000 customers and has made great contributions to progress in the fields of technology, education, health, and culture.

As a core member of the RedCLARA organization in Latin America, the RNP boasts extensive network resources and has more than 6000 km of optical fibers spanning Brazil. Brazil is currently experiencing a large rollout of new services, such as education and government private clouds, telemedicine teaching, and high-definition media data. With these new service types, bandwidth requirements are also on the rise. To address these challenges in the education industry, the RNP is partnering with Huawei to build an open, flexible, and intelligent beyond 100G network, facilitating digital transformation.

With the support of the MCTIC, MEC, and state governments in 2016, RNP and Huawei began construction of a new 100G education backbone network in northern Brazil. This new 100G education backbone network will be expanded to southern Brazil in three phases and is expected to become Brazil's core backbone network by 2020.

At today's expo, Eduardo Grizendi, CTO of Brazil's RNP, shared his company's network construction experience and future planning. "RNP and Huawei have worked together to build the first education OTN backbone network in Brazil. Huawei's ultra-large-capacity OSN 9800 platform has resolved the challenges and difficulties caused by multiple long-haul scenarios in Brazil's research network, and built a network that is beyond 100G, multi-service, and congestion-free. In addition to local network resources, the RNP also connects to international education networks in Australia, the United States, Europe, and Africa through submarine cables to enable intercommunication and sharing of education resources. We are looking forward to more cooperation with Huawei in the future."

Huawei together with its partners and customers is showcasing new digital transformation solutions to orchestrate a digital symphony at CEBIT from June 11–15 in Germany, the home of classical music. It is also hosting activities and sharing best practices around cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, Internet of Things (IoT) and software-defined networking (SDN), all of which play a critical role in today's digital transformation.
