Operating in the Internet Service Provider (ISP) market for more than 20 years, Telconet is an integrated Ecuadorian telecommunications company that provides a range of services — from data center and cloud service leasing, to enterprise Information Technology (IT) system integration and broadband — to government and finance customers throughout Latin America. Currently, the company has two large data centers located in Ecuador, covering a total of 5000 square meters and serving more than 300 customers.
In 2012, Telconet was among the first companies in the country to build large-scale cloud data centers, with one located in the capital city, Quito, and another in the nation's largest city, Santiago de Guayaquil. The company is dedicated to providing a wide range of high-quality, multi-layer, cloud hosting services for the local market, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS), and more. In recent years, however, with the requirements of enterprise cloud-based evolution dramatically rising, data center devices — specifically storage systems — have needed to be expanded or entirely replaced.
Telconet's legacy storage system was suffering any number of technical problems, given that its data center infrastructure was first brought online five years previously and was therefore approaching the end of its warranty. It was proving unable to perform capacity expansion, with device maintenance posing huge risks to the company's daily operations. In addition, performance deterioration, function shortages, and excessive disk replacements meant that it was no longer capable of handling increasing service loads.
It became clear to Telconet that deploying a next generation storage system was the right move to make. It also knew that Non-Volatile Memory express (NVMe) and Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) technologies would be able to provide all the necessary features and functions for future innovation, meeting rapid growth requirements and facilitating the development of its cloud services and solutions.
To address all of the company's issues and meet all of its requirements, Huawei Ecuador proposed the OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage Solution. Boasting high levels of performance, scalability, availability, and cost-effectiveness, as well as simplified Operations and Maintenance (O&M), the solution particularly stood out among competing products.
High performance: OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage adopts flash-dedicated FlashLink® technology to deliver high Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS) and ultra-low latency. A single set of storage systems can also carry more services to meet Service Level Agreements (SLAs), making efficient use of storage resources and improving the Return On Investment (ROI). Such high performance greatly improves the service capabilities of data centers, enabling Telconet to continue providing quality IT leasing services to expand the local market.
High scalability: The storage solution includes cache and NVMe technologies on disks and supports scale-up and scale-out, achieving excellent scalability while maintaining high performance levels. Telconet can now rest easy that its future growth will continue according to plan.
High availability: OceanStor Dorado adopts a wide range of cutting-edge technologies to ensure service continuity and stability during daily maintenance. Firstly, a fully-redundant, modular design enables hot swapping of controllers, fans, power modules, interface modules, Baseband Units (BBUs), and disk modules. Online capacity expansion also allows disks to remain online, even when additional disks are being added. Finally, disk roaming enables the storage system to automatically identify disks that have been relocated and resume their services, without the need for manual intervention.
Intelligent O&M: The eService intelligent cloud management system — eService for short — improves user O&M capabilities and takes planned maintenance actions to eliminate potential risks, in turn helping to improve Telconet's operational efficiency.
"We need to provide services to the end customer, most of which are banks. Since banks have extremely high technology and IT Infrastructure requirements, Huawei OceanStor Dorado Storage is the most cost-effective choice," said Julio Bonilla, the National Data Center Manager of Telconet.
Committed to introducing advanced technologies to build robust Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure and provide high-quality cloud hosting services in Latin America, Telconet is becoming the go-to partner for local enterprises undertaking their own digital transformation journeys. And its strategic cooperation with Huawei is just the start of a fruitful partnership. With its services only expected to develop further, on top of continued support from Huawei, Telconet plans to adopt the most advanced technologies to build a digital and intelligent Ecuador.
