Taken as a whole, the transportation sector is a huge contributor to global greenhouse emissions.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA)[1], it accounted for approximately a quarter of all global emissions in 2016, a turbocharged 71% increase from 1990. Of that figure, road transport was by far the biggest contributor — 74% — indicating just how reliant we are on the cars and trucks that daily traverse our roads.
And to compound the issue: waste.
For example, according to traffic analytics expert INRIX[2], the US wastes 1.7 billion gallons of fuel annually — US$72.7 billion literally down the drain — burning it as drivers circle, trying to find a vacant parking space.
Yet digital transformation of the transport industry is well underway. And one of the ways that IoT technologies and big data analytics can come together is to provide smart parking solutions: one study[3] concluded that the implementation of a smart parking system in a single parking lot in Arizona saved, on average, 11 seconds of parking time per vehicle.
The US has at least 105 million parking spaces (according to the New York Times[4]); 3.6 billion hours and 1.7 billion gallons of fuel are wasted annually searching for spaces (INRIX); smart parking technology has as yet largely untapped potential to revolutionize the way we park. And with that, save all that wasted fuel, capping related emissions.
That’s not all. IoT, big data, and Huawei Software-Defined Cameras (SDCs) — uniquely empowered with Artificial Intelligence (AI) — can be deployed to optimize traffic flows by redirecting traffic in heavily congested areas. Smart traffic lights in the US city of Pittsburgh recorded 40% less waiting time and 26% less travelling time for drivers, resulting in an overall vehicle emissions reduction of 21%[5].
Digital transformation of industry is about many things. One of those things — perhaps not emphasized enough — is true sustainability.
