Building Digital Guinea
The commercial deployment of the Guinean “Backbone” network, the underwater cable of optical fibre, was officially launched on September 11, 2020 in Conakry.
Designed by the Chinese telecom giant Huawei in partnership with French digital spatial planning agency TACTIS, the Backbone infrastructure will be operated by the Guinean backbone management and operation company (SOGEB). The network will connect Guinea with fibre optics over a distance of 4500 kilometres, thus connecting the whole country to a high-speed internet.
Reputed to be one of the countries with a low-speed and very expensive internet connection, Guinea is launching a new era of the Internet with fibre optics. Transparent and efficient operation, healthy collaboration with access providers and regular monitoring to maintain and optimize the Backbone infrastructure will eventually make a difference.
On July 25, 2015, the laying of the first stone of the National Backbone of Guinea by His Excellency, Mr. President, Head of State, Professor Alpha Condé took place in Dubreka.
Implementation of strategic infrastructure has continued for the past 5 years. It should be noted that during the deployment of this national network, more than 3000 direct jobs and 400,000 indirect jobs were created in Guinea, more than $ 100 million has been invested locally.
The National Backbone network, 4352 km long, serves all 8 regions, 33 prefectures and 62 main cities with the latest fiber optic transmission technologies. Thanks to this completed infrastructure, Guinea is chosen as the starting point for the interconnection works of West African countries as part of the "Smart Africa" Project, allowing it to become the West Africa Digital HUB.
