Huawei: Unleash Digital and Create New Value for Electric Power

[Dubai, October 12, 2022] Huawei successfully held its Global Electric Power Summit within the framework of HUAWEI CONNECT 2022. The summit brought together customers, partners, industry pioneers and thought leaders from the global electric power industry to jointly "Unleash Digital and Create New Value for Electric Power".

Zhou Haojie, COO of Huawei Electric Power Digitalization BU, started the summit by proposing “Green and low-carbon development are global trends, but economic development, energy security, and continuity of supply must also be considered“. He mentioned the impressive T3 transformation methodology, developed by Huawei Electric Power Digitalization BU, referring to Energy Transition, Zero-Carbon Transformation and Digital Transformation. “We believe that digital technologies and innovative ICT are instrumental to achieve our goals and optimize the way we deal with these challenges,”Mr. Zhou said. He shows his confidence and commitment in the digital journey, stating that Huawei has restructured its organization and established industry-specific digitalization business units, such as the Electric Power Digitalization Business Unit.

“The digitalization of electric power ongoing and irreversible trend,” Zhou Haojie points out. At the summit he released the white paper "Intelligent World 2030:Digitalization Trends in the Electric Power Industry" to share Huawei’s insights towards electric power 2030. He calls upon the entire industry and society to work together to drive digital journey.

Digitalization is the Key

“Digital is not just about technology, it's a state of being that touches all parts of the business,” pointed out by Faith Burn, CIO of Eskom. She genuinely shared a practical approach to digitalization, including methodology and implementation steps. She defines IT Goals as five bold steps, which are Omnichannel Orchestration, Right digital thinking and skills, Cloud Engineering, Microservices & API’s, Enterprise lean & agile adoption.

Vikesh Sachdeva, Senior Consultant of Huawei UAE Utility describes an evolution that is happening for the electric power systems: data exchange and sharing among multiple systems and data consistency are the requirements of the development of the power system; meanwhile, the needs of the customer are evolving too as they have transformed from unidirectional power users to power prosumers. What should we do with these new challenges? His answer is to build intelligent and data-driven power grids that are based on massive utility data to improve power system security and reliability.

During the summit, Zhou Haojie and David Shi, President of Huawei Middle East Enterprise Business Dept., launched the Huawei Intelligent Substation Inspection Solution. The integrated solution with one unified remote inspection system, one unified data integration system, and one unified on-site environment system, provides 24/7 real-time safety, security and risk monitoring. It reduces the errors of disconnected systems and overlays the data silos by digitized operations. It significantly improves the efficiency, accuracy and quality of daily operations.

Security is the Foundation

Jason Li, Director of Marketing & Solutions Sales, Huawei Electric Power Digitalization BU, started his speech with an interesting analogy - intrinsic security is like the "skeleton or bone structure", the security and defense systems are like "immune systems", while the intelligent operations and management is like the "brain", that can quickly and intelligently turn around the "uncertainty" of the systems. To further defend and secure the digital space, Huawei proposes to build a resilient and secure architecture for electric power based on three defense mechanisms, covering anti-interruption at the transmission layer, anti-attack at the network layer and anti-ransomware at the data layer. “It will help achieve external compliance, ensure service continuity and prevent network breakdown. As such, it it will further reduce situations of data loss and business being interrupted,” he emphasizes. He also announces the release of Huawei's “White Paper on Electric Power Communication All-Optical Network”, which describes the power communication network architecture with an intelligent optical base and NHP-based all-optical architecture for electric power communication networks.

Services Bring Added Value

Robert Mugo, General Manager of Information and Technology, KPLC shared the Fiber Optic Data Services Project with us. Previously, there was no reliable fiber connectivity between Mombasa and Nairobi to deliver new capacity of data connectivity. Therefore, KPLC decided to use its OPGW on the transmission lines to meet this need. "We rolled out an FTTX Solution to provide OT Solutions to meet Smart Grid requirements of transformers, feeder meters and customer meters data acquisition and transmittal, and IT Solutions to provide Data Services for ISPs and Corporate Clients," Robert adds. The project helped KPLC to increase its revenue diversification and profitablity.

As the Huawei Global Electric Power Summit comes to an end, Zhou Haojie concluded in his speech, “to achieve the carbon neutrality goals, we must integrate energy transition and digital transformation. This will be a long and complex journey. But it’s a journey worth taking.”
