M8 Macao x Huawei: Rising from History, Revived Through Technology

From its inauguration in 1963 to its reconstruction journey in 2018, this 60-year-old building, full of historical microcosms, has found the answer to the future with the help of digital intelligence technology.

Macao is a popular tourist destination and a haven for shoppers, thanks to its captivating fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, vibrant business environment, and wide array of shopping choices. Macao's consumer service industry has jumped at emerging technologies that allow for more personalized user experiences and experiential consumption. A prime example of this is the M8 project, which has successfully integrated digital and intelligent technologies with cultural tourism and shopping.

Located at the heart of the Historic Centre of Macao, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, M8 stands at the intersection of the city's centuries-old cultural and commercial veins. It is only 50 meters from Senado Square — the main entrance to the Ruins of St. Paul's — and surrounded by eight heritage sites within a radius of just over 100 meters. This area attracts around 20 million vis complex itors every year.

The exterior of M8 cleverly blends Chinese and Portuguese architectural styles, incorporating elements from both the past and present. Its unique, ingenious spatial design preserves the historical essence of the city and seamlessly integrates with its modern, urban fabric. To prevent glare, M8's facade uses the world's first large curved glass laminated with 1 mm thick translucent natural stone. This innovative composite material is a result of three years of research and development and has set the Guinness World Record for the largest curved stone-laminated glass.

M8 aims to establish itself as a cultural and commercial landmark in Macao. It currently has one anchor tenant, two floors of international boutique collective stores, three unique restaurants making their Macao debut, and four cultural activity facilities. This combination of culture and commerce is a new way for the city to develop more destinations for tourists.

A Brand-New Look and a Quest for an Intelligent Future

M8 was developed using a "less is more" philosophy. Dedicated to preserving, protecting, and revitalizing world cultural heritage, M8 has emerged as one of the most notable revitalization efforts of Macao's world heritage protection area.

The M8 building was first constructed in 1963 as a dormitory for the employees of the Macao Post service. In 2018, the building was slated for an urban renewal project and selected to become a vibrant hub for culture, tourism, and commerce. The renovation plans drew from Macao's historical culture while respecting the urban context. Its design fuses Chinese and Portuguese styles, old and new, dynamic and static, to ensure it is best integrated with neighboring urban areas, communities, and streets so that it can naturally "grow" from the land. The resulting structure seamless connects Senado Square with the surrounding streets.

M8's reconstruction preserved many well-loved design features and materials from the old building, including the Portuguese-style laundry basins, the atrium's trees, the spiral staircases, many unique railings, and other decorative concrete blocks.

In September 2024, M8 unveiled its brand-new image. The makeover not only gives it a new exterior appearance and interior space, but also allows for unique applications of digital and intelligent technologies.

As a next-generation complex that integrates cultural, shopping, and leisure experiences, M8 has attracted merchants and consumers from all over the world. Behind its success lies a massive volume of complex services powered by an efficient and reliable network system.

This meant future-oriented network planning were critical right from the beginning of the project. M8 required an advanced network infrastructure that incorporated cutting-edge technologies to ensure that the solution would remain future-proof for at least five years. Intelligent network O&M was also a key requirement in order to streamline network management and minimize O&M overhead.

Huawei's Solution: Go Smarter with an Intelligent Network

Huawei's answer to M8's quest for a futuristic network involves a high-quality campus network solution that leverages a CloudCampus-based architecture to deliver the ultra-high bandwidth, automation, and visualization needed for smart shopping malls.

Meticulous network planning ensured the quality and scalability of the information infrastructure, and redundancies built into critical nodes guarantee network reliability. Huawei also provided advanced access security and simplified O&M options. The iMaster NCE-Campus platform provides a range of user authentication methods, including 802.1x, Portal, SMS, and social media authentication for user access control. In addition, iMaster NCE-CampusInsight visualizes the management of network devices, enabling proactive O&M, fast fault location, and intelligent optimization.

Innovation Unlocked in a Smart Mall

With Huawei's solution in place, M8's shopping mall has comprehensive, yet adaptive Wi-Fi coverage, with different device models selected for different scenarios. The concealed devices are equipped with omnidirectional camouflage antennas to ensure both a visually pleasing setup and seamless signal coverage. Moreover, end-to-end ultra-broadband networking, coupled with redundancy backup for critical components, provides high-speed Internet access for users and guarantees the network will continue to meet future service evolution and business continuity needs for the next five years.

M8's Wi-Fi network has operated smoothly since its launch in September 2024, in all of its indoor shops and outdoor rest areas. The mall's business system has also run smoothly without significant lag or downtime, even during peak hours. iMaster NCE-CampusInsight has visualized management and automatically identified faults, making the work of the mall's IT staff easier and more efficient. These different user experiences are only possible thanks to the intelligent network and the support it provides for every completed service, management activity, merchant registration, and consumer visit.

In November 2024, M8 was named the "RLI Most Anticipated Opening" at the 2024 Global RLI Awards in recognition of the excellent and innovative retail and leisure experiences it is able to deliver. M8 was also the only gold award recipient from China and is one of only two winners from Asia in this year's competition.

M8 has undergone a complete makeover, from its exterior design and spatial planning, to its commercial services, operations, and technological applications. M8 showcases the vigor of Macao's cultural and commercial innovation and will continue to serve as a remarkable model for next-generation smart malls.

Thanks to digital and intelligent technologies, this iconic building, filled with Macao's unique cultural charm and historical heritage, has found a new role. It has been transformed from a traditional staff dormitory to a fresh landmark of Macao ready to navigate into the future.
