Copper wire theft in PV plants has been prevented, achieving no theft cases at a facility in Ibaraki Prefecture after this solution was introduced.
In Japan, the copper cable theft damage in PV plants rapidly increased by YoY 170% in 2024. In the North Kanto area in particular, the total damage amounted to about 270 million yen, posing a business continuity risk. As the traditional wired security systems are usually out of function due to disconnected wiring and there are many uninsured losses, drastic countermeasures have been required throughout the industry.
Huawei's proposed solution centers on "Transition from Surveillance to Prevention".
The main technological advantages are as follows:
・Pre-deterrence function for threats:
When an intruder approaches the monitoring area, a loud alert and LED light are activated automatically. It encourages intimidation and exit before a crime is committed.
・Wide-area and high-precision monitoring:
A camera that can rotate 360 degrees monitors the areas equivalent to the Tokyo Dome 24 hours a day. It can realize monitoring even in the dark.
・Reduced construction cost:
There is no need for wiring work, reducing the introduction cost by up to 60%. The installation period per PV plant was shortened to less than two days.
The PV plants in Ibaraki Prefecture have recorded no copper wire theft damages for four consecutive months since the solution was introduced in March 2025. Previously, there occurred an average of one theft damage per month, but the intimidation function clearly showed the prevention effect.
"No theft cases have occurred at the PV plants in Ibaraki Prefecture since the solution was introduced. The solution can realize 100% intrusion route monitoring and activate intimidation just when the criminal approaches, enabling deterrence at the attempt stage. Previously, it was a follow-up response of "damage occurrence -> record confirmation", but it is now possible to make a proactive defense of "intrusion detection -> immediate intimidation -> crime prevention", a facility manager of West Energy Solution emphasized on the effect.
