The innovation hub of the Greater Bay Area—the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin—is undergoing a medical revolution that has been millennia in the making. Here, the Chinese Medicine Guangdong Laboratory (CMGL) is rewriting the future of Chinese Medicine (CM) alongside Huawei. Together, they are introducing the immense computing power of AI into CM's heritage and innovation. Jointly established by the Executive Committee of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and Zhuhai Municipal Government, with core support from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and Guangdong Provincial Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine), CMGL stands as a high-end scientific and technological platform for CM in the zone.
Building this platform came with three pressing challenges:
1. Scientific research heavily relied on the manual processing of vast amounts of ancient CM texts and empirical data, leading to weak collaboration.
2. Conventional experimental methods resulted in prolonged cycles from classical text mining to clinical validation, making it difficult to achieve precision and standardization.
3. Management was hampered by data silos across systems, leading to inefficient resource allocation.
To address these challenges, CMGL partnered with Huawei to build a targeted digital foundation for CM modernization, which boasts three main elements. The unified cloud platform integrates computing power and data, breaking down silos and enabling collaborative research within a large team. The large model, embedded with a full-process digital and intelligent outpatient service, not only revolutionizes service models, but also creates a closed clinic-to-research data loop. The intelligent operations system achieves refined management and promotes standardized workflows. Together, these three elements work in synergy to upgrade CMGL to a data-driven, intelligently collaborative, and continuously evolving smart system.
CMGL has collaborated closely with Huawei to build the unified cloud platform that deeply integrates high-performance computing with AI computing, creating a "super brain" to support big data processing and large model training in CM. Backed by this platform's robust computing power, CMGL successfully developed the Hengqin-R1, a proprietary, vertical large model for CM. This model has awakened medical classics that slumbered for millennia, and allows them to engage in a profound "dialogue" with modern scientific research data, offering unprecedented computing power required for the quantitative and standardized research of CM.
At Zhuhai Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital under Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, the Hengqin-R1 model is undergoing its ultimate test: real-world clinical practice. The nation's first full-process digital and intelligent CM outpatient system was launched here, which has made a revolutionary breakthrough.
Intelligent consultation before diagnosis: Data collection through the four intelligent diagnostic methods (inspection, listening & smelling, inquiring, and palpation), coupled with agent-based interaction, significantly shortens the time spent in waiting for diagnosis.
Human-machine collaboration during diagnosis: During consultation between doctors and AI, the large model recommends treatment plans while the doctor makes the final decision. This approach preserves the essence of CM's syndrome differentiation while enhancing diagnostic accuracy.
Full-cycle management after diagnosis: By establishing dynamic health records and an intelligent follow-up mechanism, the vision of quantifiable efficacy and traceable recovery has become a reality, effectively extending the reach of medical services.
