Smart Pole Site Solution Facilitates 5G New Infrastructure Construction in Hebi

Based on the smart pole site, Huawei Digital Site Solution has built a comprehensive IoT sensing system for Hebi, Henan Province, featuring full-area coverage, all-element sensing, and all-scenario intelligence. This marks the first full-area coverage of smart pole sites at the city level in China, facilitating the intelligent upgrade of smart city outfield infrastructure.

Since the first smart city pilot project was implemented in Hebi, Henan Province, the city has vigorously rolled out comprehensive urban applications based on the new infrastructure of 5G smart cities. Smart pole sites are a typical example of new infrastructure and also being used in the digital governance of new smart cities. Leveraging the three features of the smart pole site solution, namely, full-area coverage, all-element sensing, and all-scenario intelligence, Huawei has deployed more than 8,000 smart pole sites on road sections such as the eastern section of Qibin Avenue, Liyang East Road, Tianlai Street, and Taibo North Street. This marks the first full-area coverage of smart pole sites at the city level in China, helping Hebi build digital and intelligent smart city infrastructure.

Pain Points

Low construction and deployment efficiency: Traditional infrastructure construction requires trenching and cable burying, leading to slow deployment and high costs. In addition, complex operations and maintenance (O&M) challenges hinder the rapid implementation of smart cities. Also, higher requirements are imposed on broadband stability.

High energy consumption costs: Traditional street lamps have fixed lighting and lack intelligent control capabilities. As a result, energy is wasted, which is not in line with dual carbon goals nor the concept of green city construction.

High labor costs for management: Urban infrastructure resources are scattered and lack unified integration. Routine inspection and management rely on manual operations, resulting in low efficiency and making it difficult to implement refined and intelligent management and control.

Solution

Microwave backhaul, ensuring bandwidth: When it comes to reconstructing old lamp poles, P2P microwave networking and video device SuperCoding are used to implement construction within hours, plug-and-play, and zero configuration. Methods such as refined ROI analysis, pixel-level video stream segmentation, hierarchical quality evaluation, and intelligent and accurate bit rate control are used to save video storage space and halve bandwidth based on H.265, a.k.a High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC).

Lighting control based on vehicle detection, ensuring precise sensing and control: Traditional street lamps are upgraded to save energy. High-speed power line communication (HPLC) is used to quickly implement the digital upgrade of street lamps without optical fiber deployment. Radar sensing is used to implement lamp control, that is, lights are turned on when vehicles arrive and turned off when vehicles leave.

Cloud-edge collaboration and one source for multiple purposes: Cloud-edge-device collaboration and combined front-end and back-end analysis are implemented. More than 20 algorithms are used to cover the four application scenarios of urban management, that is, public hygiene, public order, landscaping & greenery, and facilities. AI-empowered video inspection improves management efficiency by more than 20%.

Solution Benefits

Full-area coverage: When it comes to reconstructing old lamp poles with power supplies but without network, P2P/P2MP microwave backhaul, video sensing products, and other products are combined to build microwave backhaul sites, removing the need for trenching and cable burying. The construction can be completed within hours, and the maximum bandwidth of a single site is 250 Mbit/s.

All-element sensing: In the smart lighting scenario featuring precise control, the "radar sensing + HPLC + smart gateway AR502H" portfolio is used to build lamp control sites. This implements industry-unique precise sensing of pedestrians, motor vehicles, and non-motorized vehicles on the road, as well as lamp control with edge autonomy, providing comfortable lighting and saving energy.

All-scenario intelligence: Regarding video security, Huawei builds AI-based video sites based on the portfolio of "video devices + edge computing + Huawei Cloud/HoloSens Cloud" to implement intelligent collaboration among the cloud, edge, and devices. AI-empowered video inspection and remote deterrence through pole-display linkage help improve the comprehensive management efficiency of cities by 20%.

Huawei's smart pole site solution, with its innovative technologies, has enabled 5G new infrastructure construction in Hebi, setting a benchmark for the full-area coverage of smart pole sites at the city level nationwide and promoting the transformation of city governance from traditional management to intelligent governance. Moving forward, Huawei will continue to explore the smart city field, provide better products and solutions to enable Hebi to write a new chapter in smart city construction, and contribute more to the development of new smart cities.
