Against the backdrop of the Iraqi government's comprehensive strategy to promote digital transformation, in 2021 the Secretariat of the Iraqi Council of Ministers has officially launched a national smart school transformation project aimed at significantly improving educational infrastructure and teaching quality. This initiative is dedicated to setting an example of modernized regional education, with a plan to upgrade 50 public schools in phases into comprehensive smart education centers that integrate technology and foster an interconnected ecosystem. The goal is to achieve universal coverage of smart teaching systems across all primary and secondary schools nationwide, enabling more students to access fairer educational resources and realize inclusive education. By leveraging the software and hardware facilities of digital and smart classrooms, Iraq is committed to transforming the traditional classroom model into a digital teaching approach, breaking through geographical and resource limitations, and achieving educational equity and quality improvement. The core of this transformation lies in the development and sharing of digital teaching content by excellent educators. By integrating remote teaching systems and educational cloud platforms, high-quality resources can be made widely available. Ultimately, this will create a technology-enabled, resource-inclusive, and data-driven educational ecosystem, where every student can receive high-quality learning support in a fair environment. This initiative aims to cultivate future talents for Iraq who are well-prepared for the digital age, thereby laying a solid foundation for the sustainable evolution of Iraq's education system.
In the process of advancing educational digitalization, the project faces multiple complex challenges. After years of turmoil, Iraq has entered a phase of rapid development. The country's leadership places great importance on education and digital transformation, aiming to rebuild the education system and align it with international standards. However, Iraq still faces multiple challenges.
The regional development imbalance is particularly prominent. Students in remote areas difficult to access fair educational resources. Infrastructure weaknesses, such as unstable internet and power supply, lack necessary digital hardware, such as smart boards, and high-quality digital educational resources are not sufficiently available. In addition, Iraq faces a shortage of teachers, a need to improve the digital literacy of educators, and slow progress in the iterative development of digital teaching materials.
