PSE Engineering: More Storage Space for CAD Files

PSE Engineering, an engineering service provider, has increasingly digitalized its processes in recent years. To cope with data growth and comply with legal requirements, the company decided to revamp its storage infrastructure.

Whether it's oil and gas plants, supply technology, or environmental planning, PSE plans and constructs modern industrial plants, efficient plant technology, and sustainable, safe components from its headquarters in Quakenbrück, Lower Saxony, as well as from other national and international locations.

The expert in engineering services implements the construction of the plants in collaboration with partners. PSE takes on the construction management; and supervises and monitors the subcontractors.

To become more efficient in project business, the company has digitized a growing number of its processes in recent years. Additionally, customers wanted to intensify digital collaboration, and regulations required certain information and documents to be available digitally or online. For example, the Procurement Ordinance (VgV) and the E-Government Act stipulate that contracts with subcontractors, suppliers, or customers must be submitted and documented electronically.

Storage capacity reached its limit

To securely provide digital processes, data, and applications at all times, the company operates a data center in Quakenbrück and a smaller data center in Hanover. After more than five years in use, the existing storage solutions had reached their limits. The storage capacity was barely sufficient to store the extensive CAD files of the many technical drawings. Moreover, the hard drive technology used was outdated. "Therefore, we decided to invest in a new storage solution with modern all-flash technology," says Waldemar Werle, Head of IT Services at PSE Engineering.

The solution: Huawei OceanStor Dorado 3000

Together with infoworxx, a Huawei partner and long-time IT service provider for PSE, Waldemar Werle searched for a suitable storage solution. infoworxx evaluated various storage scenarios and determined that Huawei OceanStor Dorado 3000 best met PSE's requirements. The all-flash storage solution offers state-of-the-art technology, ensuring high performance and reliability. It allows PSE to position itself securely in the storage environment for the future.

infoworxx introduced the first Huawei OceanStor Dorado 3000 in Quakenbrück in 2023. In October 2024, the IT service provider implemented the second model in Hanover within a day. "In parallel with productive operation, we first installed test environments and configured the storage systems accordingly. One week after the Huawei OceanStor Dorado 3000 was put into operation, we shut down the old systems," says Sebastian Lemke, Managing Director at infoworxx.

New storage system: digital backbone for business processes

Currently, the locations in Quakenbrück and Hanover are securely connected via a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, allowing all data to be stored redundantly. "It was also important to us that the new storage solution seamlessly integrates with the Windows-based virtualization software that we will soon introduce," says Werle. Since the OceanStor Dorado 3000 comes with numerous pre-configured interfaces, no new APIs need to be developed to integrate additional applications.

The Huawei solutions offer PSE a storage capacity of up to 35 terabytes, including deduplication. This method ensures that identical data is stored only once, avoiding redundant copies and requiring less storage capacity. This not only reduces costs but also saves significant space and energy in PSE's data centers. "We anticipate that the storage resources at PSE will be sufficient for the next five years," says Lemke. And if storage needs increase in the short term, Huawei's storage shelf provides enough slots to quickly and easily add new SSDs.

Significantly better performance in data access

Another advantage: Huawei's support team responds immediately and provides competent assistance. Updates are applied to the storage system without disrupting ongoing operations. "Since installation, the storage solutions have been working flawlessly," says Lemke. Thanks to OceanStor Dorado 3000, PSE has been able to increase its overall operational safety, as the data is mirrored and redundantly maintained at two locations. Additionally, data access performance is significantly higher than before—especially for CAD users, who can now perform database queries much faster. For Waldemar Werle, the new storage environment has already proven its value: "The price-performance ratio of Huawei products is excellent, the cooperation with infoworxx is going very well, and the support is prompt and reliable."
