Huawei Network Summit 2025 (Asia Pacific) | Huawei and WAA Jointly Release the Smart Campus Wi-Fi CSI Sensing Development and Use Cases White Paper

—— "Wi-Fi + X" Creates Intelligent Spaces for Safer and More Efficient Campus Operations

[Hong Kong, China, June 6, 2025] At the Huawei Network Summit 2025 (Asia Pacific), Huawei joined hands with the World WLAN Application Alliance (WAA) and industry pioneers to release the Smart Campus Wi-Fi CSI Sensing Development and Use Cases White Paper (hereinafter referred to as the "White Paper").

The White Paper explores Wi-Fi Channel State Information (CSI) sensing trends, elaborates on Wi-Fi extension from connectivity to sensing, and delves into extensive use cases of Wi-Fi CSI sensing on smart campuses. The release of the White Paper will further catalyze the maturity of the Wi-Fi CSI sensing industry and create intelligent spaces by sensing everything through "Wi-Fi + X".

Guests attending the launch ceremony include Mr. Crane H. Yang, Executive Secretary of WAA, Mr. Ross Yu, Technical Editor of IEEE 802.11bn, Mr. Winson Cheang, Head of Infrastructure and User Services Section at the University of Macau, Mr. Shawn Zhao, President of the Campus Network Domain at Huawei's Data Communication Product Line, and Mr. Yury Yin, Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei's Data Communication Product Line.

The White Paper points out that "Wi-Fi + X" can converge connectivity and sensing to turbocharge the digital and intelligent transformation of campuses. For example, "Wi-Fi + CSI" can be used for human presence detection. This capability is valuable for hotel guestrooms (seamless check-in and intelligent energy saving), school dormitories (security inspection at night), and industrial safety (intrusion detection in restricted areas). Beyond this, "Wi-Fi + millimeter wave" can precisely identify abnormal behavior such as falls and detect breathing and heartbeat rates. This offers intelligent assurance for scenarios like smart healthcare (vital sign detection and unattended healthcare).

Huawei's Xinghe Intelligent Campus Solution has strategically expanded from connectivity to sensing by introducing Wi-Fi 7 Advanced technology. Specifically, APs work like "sonar" to send and receive signals, so that they can sense wireless channel fluctuations caused by centimeter-level micro-motions in the environment. At the summit, the Wi-Fi sensing and IoT experience zone impressed all participants by accurately detecting human presence and motion behavior.

By leveraging dedicated sensing algorithms and comprehensive signal scanning, signal analysis, and AI feature matching technologies, an AP alone can accurate detect the presence of unauthorized cameras. On top of that, millimeter-wave radar technology helps monitor breathing, heartbeat, and out-of-bed status 24/7 in a contactless manner, which is free from manual inspection. All of these help create a smart campus featuring intelligent spaces and comprehensive security.

"Huawei's Xinghe Intelligent Campus Solution has gone beyond the scope of data communication and is extending to connect and sense everything. This solution underscores the significance of 'Wi-Fi + X', which leverages ubiquitous Wi-Fi APs to integrate general-purpose technologies (GPTs) such as IoT, sensing, and location-based service (LBS)," said Shawn Zhao, President of the Campus Network Domain, Huawei's Data Communication Product Line. "We firmly believe that 'Wi-Fi + X' takes smart campuses to new levels by implementing campus digital twins, creating intelligent campus spaces, and collaborating with campus management systems. It is ideal for scenarios such as space security, privacy protection, energy saving, asset management, and contactless healthcare monitoring. This, in turn, makes campus operations more secure and intelligent."

Looking ahead, Huawei will further innovate in the WLAN field, work more closely with global customers and partners, provide more solid technical support, and contribute more to the application ecosystem to unleash the unlimited potential of Wi-Fi CSI sensing.
