The universe is infinite. Human curiosity about the stars dates back to primitive society. Its consequent observations and records make astronomy one of the oldest human studies.

Zhang Yu, an astronomy amateur, discovered a new comet in Cepheus during routine observation using a remote-control observatory. The Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams of the International Astronomical Union named this comet Z-2029, or the Zhangyu Comet.

In 1609, Galileo invented the telescope, a novel way to explore the universe. People like Zhang Yu see beyond the naked eye to a wider range of cosmic structures and distant phenomena. Today, the human eye sees beyond the visible spectrum. Technology lets us observe the entire electromagnetic range of radio waves, microwaves, and infrared, and also ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma rays. We now answer more and more fundamental questions of the universe with the help of different telescopes, giant radio antennas, and satellites launched into space.

The exploration of the universe also catalyzes scientific theories and new technologies. Figures like Galileo and Bruno, and theories like heliocentrism, were at the forefront of this exploration. It is through exploration that we witness the supreme beauty of the universe; it is for exploration that we constantly uncover new technologies.

Technology has made our exploration and achievements today incomparable to the past. One such advance is high-performance computing, an important tool for modern astrophysics. Zhang Jinqin, a villager from Qiazi in Qinghai Province, China, recalls how nights used to be nothing but darkness. Everyone went to bed early. However, things have changed since the streetlamps – Zhang often stays out till late at the neighbors’ or at dances with friends in the square.

Instead of depending on moonlight for illumination, villagers walk without fear under energy-storage photovoltaic streetlamps that light up at precisely seven every evening. Years of lip service to the environment have begun to catch up to China’s rapid economic development. Frequent haze hits many areas and there is pressure to improve environmental and air quality. Economic progress and popular demand fuel energy conservation and environmental protection efforts. More and more enterprises are dedicated to developing clean energy, safeguarding green hills, clear waters, and blue skies.

As one of the richest sources of clean energy, Qinghai Province has fostered the new energy industry from scratch to market leader over the recent years. By the end of 2017, Qinghai’s installed power capacity reached 25.43 million kW, with 84.3% from renewable energy, the source of 75% of the 61.5 billion kWh of total power generated. These are leading numbers both in China and globally. In addition, Qinghai generated 100% clean energy for seven consecutive days (168 hours) in 2017, breaking the world record and drawing worldwide attention.

To sustain the ecology and preserve lucid waters and lush mountains, Huawei’s big data solution delves into the data and revolutionizes traditional development with an Internet mindset. The solution builds a clean energy big data platform to utilize clean energy data assets and bolster clean energy development in Qinghai.

Urban infrastructure is a key indicator of overall national strength, and transportation a vital role. China’s rapid development of the high-speed railway in recent years has made transportation more convenient for millions of long-distance commuters like Zhang.

Good transportation is the foundation of a prosperous economy. A wide range of transportation philosophies are proliferating around the world, including super high-speed railways of up to 1,500 km/h, space shuttles, and autonomous driving. Scientists are drawing the blueprint for transportation of the future.

The 40th anniversary of China’s reform coincides with the 10th anniversary of its high-speed railway. The high-speed railway has grown in leaps and bounds, not only changing China and stunning the world, but also improving lives.

High-speed trains flash from one city to another, and behind the scenes, huge teams work to ensure efficient and safe operation. From workplace to home, Zhang’s routine is in aspiration of a better life for his family, and his confidence is in the collective effort to improve his commute.

Buying tickets is a single tap on the phone. China’s efforts on the high-speed railway and demand from its giant population have culminated in a convenient online ticketing system, accessible 24/7 by phone or computer. To this end, China Railway Corporation adopted Huawei’s Fusion Operations Control Center (OCC) Solution, capable of booking up to 10 million tickets a day while ensuring the security and reliability of the system and services.

Making Life on the Cloud Convenient

Li Yu, a Beijing citizen, enjoys life. He applies for his residence permit online and drops off the supporting materials once, instead of flitting from government department to government department. Any doubt is clarified easily with the WeChat public account of the local government. Li pays his utilities and files his taxes online in seconds.

Before the online Government Affairs Service Center was established, government services underperformed. With no central approval platform, people had to go to different departments for different services.

The e-Government Cloud provides one-window processing, one-stop services and approval, one-time charging, and one-table presentation, enabling Beijing citizens to experience convenience and support like never before. An applicant queues just once and submits a service application to a single department. The application triggers a collaborative approval process involving all related departments. The overall approval time can be precisely estimated, during which all the departments involved review and approve the application in a parallel manner. The applicant is notified of any missing material immediately. This streamlined process puts the data to work so people benefit.

In the cloud computing era, governments prefer its efficiency, convenience and transparency. e-Government Clouds now span Guangzhou, Shanghai, Henan, and Jiangxi. With more government-led data resource integration, the public enjoys the fruits of cloud computing and big data. Behind the scenes, Huawei’s solutions for governments of 20 national ministries and commissions, 17 provinces/municipalities (such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Jiangxi), and over 230 cities/counties (such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen), boost government efficiency and civilian happiness.

We are compelled to fulfill dreams and pursue excellence. This strength derives from faith and persistence, from our support systems, and from Huawei. Real strength is quiet and steadfast, and propels us as one into the cloud of the future.
