Modernizing Healthcare: Hygeia Hospital’s Digital Transformation Journey

Hygeia Hospital upgrades IT to handle surging patient data, ensuring fast, secure, and always-available digital care.

In healthcare, every second matters. This is why the reliability of digital systems is no longer optional — it’s essential. Hospitals today face an overwhelming surge of patient data, advanced imaging, telemedicine, and AI-powered diagnostics, all of which demand fast, secure, and always-available IT infrastructure. Without it, delays in service delivery can compromise care and outcomes.

Recognizing these stakes, Hygeia Hospital embarked on a bold digital transformation journey, powered by innovative IT solutions, to ensure that its doctors, nurses, and staff could focus on what matters most: saving lives.

Hygeia Hospital: Excellence in Care and Innovation

Hygeia Hospital is a proud member of the Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG), the largest private healthcare network in Greece. Established in 1970, the hospital was founded with the mission of advancing medical and nursing care in a market full of opportunities and growth potential. Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG) itself is a regional leader, treating over 1.1 million patients each year with the support of nearly 7,000 doctors and more than 5,600 employees. Its extensive network includes 1,655 inpatient beds, 92 operating rooms, 19 delivery rooms, and a wide range of advanced medical technologies.

Within this ecosystem, Hygeia Hospital stands out as a flagship institution: a 17-floor facility covering 30,000 square meters, equipped with 315 beds, 33 intensive care units, and 18 state-of-the-art operating rooms — designed to deliver comprehensive, high-quality care to every patient who walks through its doors.

Addressing the Strain of High-Volume Patient Data

With this scale of operations, Hygeia Hospital is among the Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG) units with the greatest storage demands. A significant portion of these requirements comes from PACS files essential to diagnostics and treatment, which place considerable pressure on available resources and push existing systems to their limits. Doctors and staff required uninterrupted access to information, yet increasing volumes of imaging and patient records were straining the available resources. The exceptionally high number of cases handled by the hospital results in a continuous surge of data generation, further amplifying the need for more robust infrastructure.

To remain at the forefront of healthcare delivery, the hospital recognized the urgent need for a new foundation. Priorities were clear: expand storage capacity to meet growing data volumes, ensure secure and uninterrupted access to critical files, and build a scalable infrastructure ready for future technologies. Beyond storage, the goal was also to strengthen business continuity, improve efficiency in data management, and reinforce operational resilience — all of which would safeguard the hospital’s commitment to delivering fast, reliable, and high-quality care.

Next-Generation Storage for Critical Healthcare Data

To meet these growing demands, Hygeia Hospital turned to Huawei for a high-performance and reliable storage infrastructure designed specifically to support its Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). After a thorough review of requirements, the hospital selected Huawei OceanStor Dorado 3000 V6 all-flash storage system, a solution built to deliver the speed, reliability, and scalability essential for modern healthcare environments.

The system is based on an all-flash architecture, using SSD-only drives to provide ultra-low latency and consistently high performance — critical for handling large volumes of medical imaging data, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. Equipped with 10GbE connectivity, the deployment ensures rapid and reliable data transfer between PACS servers, hospital applications, and storage. This means medical staff can access imaging files quickly and without delay, directly supporting faster diagnostics and improved patient workflows.

Beyond performance, Huawei’s solution was selected for its robust reliability and data protection. With features such as end-to-end data security, RAID-TP, and the Huawei HyperMetro option for high availability, the hospital gained confidence that critical medical data would always remain secure and accessible. At the same time, the platform offers scalability, allowing storage capacity to expand as future imaging demands increase, all without service interruption.

The solution also incorporates SmartTier and inline data reduction, maximizing storage efficiency and optimizing the use of SSD resources. Meanwhile, Huawei’s Management Platform (DeviceManager) simplifies daily operations with intuitive monitoring and management tools, empowering the hospital’s IT team to oversee the system with ease. Designed as a future-ready architecture, the deployment can be seamlessly integrated with additional Huawei solutions for disaster recovery, research, or expanded, AI-based diagnostic applications — ensuring that Hygeia Hospital remains prepared for tomorrow’s challenges.

Delivering Speed, Reliability, and Scalability

Since implementing the Huawei OceanStor Dorado 3000 V6 All-Flash Storage with SSD drives and 10GbE connectivity, Hygeia Hospital has seen significant improvements across its operations. Access to PACS imaging data is now faster than ever, allowing doctors to retrieve critical medical images quickly, enhance productivity, and deliver more efficient patient care.

The hospital’s IT infrastructure has become highly reliable and available, providing peace of mind that all patient data remains secure and accessible at all times — a crucial requirement in the healthcare sector. At the same time, the solution offers a scalable, future-proof foundation, ensuring that the hospital can continue to expand its digital capabilities without interruptions, supporting long-term goals for its ongoing digital transformation.

By combining speed, resilience, and scalability, Huawei’s solution has transformed the hospital’s digital foundation into a platform that not only meets today’s demands but anticipates tomorrow’s!

“Our collaboration with Huawei has fully met our expectations. The selection of each component was made based on strict technological criteria, which they not only met but exceeded through the quality of the solutions and services”
