A New Challenge: Mass Unstructured Data
Backup and Archiving

A New Challenge: Mass Unstructured Data Backup and Archiving Huawei's Global Industry Vision (GIV) report predicts that, by 2030, the amount of data generated globally will leap by a factor of 20, reaching 1 YB annually. That's equal to the storage capacity of four trillion 256 GB mobile phones. We are, assuredly, entering the yottabyte era.

Over 80 % of that data will be unstructured, consisting mainly of videos and images. As its value continues to be explored through advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data, effective backup and archiving will become a pressing concern for every enterprise.

  • Storing Mass Data Brings New Challenges

    • Traditional scale-up array storage cannot keep up with mass data growth.
    • The long-term retention of mass data, necessary in order to comply with regulations, substantially increases Information Technology (IT) costs.
  • Data Silos Lead to a Poor User Experience

    • Traditional siloed deployment makes data flow difficult for different applications, access protocols, and storage device models.
    • The read/write performance models of different applications interfere with each other, negatively impacting the user experience.
  • Unstructured Data Matters in Operational Analysis

    • As unstructured data gains importance in the analysis of key enterprise services, demand for security, reliability, and speed increases.

Object Storage: Revolutionizing Mass Unstructured Data

Easy Access from Diverse Terminals Anytime and Anywhere

Object storage uses Representational State Transfer (RESTful) interfaces for read and write, eliminating network security risks from complex Network-Attached Storage (NAS) protocols and interactions. This makes it a great fit for public network transmission. In addition, S3 is supported by multiple types of terminal devices.

Millisecond-Level Read Latency with a Flat Data Structure

Unlike traditional file storage, which organizes data into different folders in a tree structure, object storage directly accesses files through Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), just like picking items directly out of a filing cabinet drawer. In tests, object storage has shown a read speed of 10 ms in a system containing hundreds of billions of files, while file storage has reached the second level.

Simple Permission Management and Resource Isolation for Security

With deepening enterprise cloudification, a physical storage device must be provided for multiple enterprises, departments, or individual users in a data center. Objects are designed based on tenants to effectively share storage resources, simplify configuration and management, and improve data security.
