Huawei Launches Smart 100G Enhanced MS-OTN Solution, Helping Guangzhou Metro Group Build a Safer Subway

Oct 12, 2018

[Shanghai, China, October 12, 2018] At HUAWEI CONNECT 2018, Huawei officially released its Smart 100G Enhanced MS-OTN solution. Based on its experience in constructing a bearer network for Guangzhou Metro Group, Huawei shared understanding about the services trends and requirements of subway upper-layer networks, dedicated communications systems, and police communications systems.

After more than 20 years of construction, Guangzhou today has 13 subway lines totaling 391.7 km in length, including an automated people mover (APM) line and the Guangzhou-Foshan intercity line, as well as the Haizhu Island Circular Tram totaling 7.7 km in length. In terms of both annual ridership and system length, Guangzhou Metro ranks fourth in the world. Consequently, Guangzhou Metro Group has entered an era of big network operations, with a rapid growth in passenger traffic. At present, the daily ridership exceeds 7.6 million, with a peak daily ridership of over 10.026 million, accounting for more than 44% of all public transportation journeys in the city. The intensity of Guangzhou’s passenger traffic in the subway ranks first in China.[Note 1]

Such dense passenger traffic puts pressure on safe subway operations and public safety, and high-bandwidth services such as HD video have now entered the fast lane. However, as the foundation of dedicated subway and police systems, the existing transmission network has increasing limitations in terms of bandwidth and networking.

To address the requirements of high bandwidth, strict physical isolation of services, high network reliability, and smooth evolution, Huawei has developed the Smart 100G Enhanced MS-OTN solution. This move satisfies the subway industry’s requirements for transmission backbone networks in the following ways:

  • Ultra-high bandwidth, scalable to 20T in the future: This solution supports expansion from 80-wavelength 100G to 96-wavelength 200G, satisfying subway customers’ medium- and long-term bandwidth requirements.
  • Unified switching architecture: This solution supports the access and transmission of multiple services, such as PDH, SDH, Ethernet, and ODUk, and provides a comprehensive bearer network for subway services.
  • High security and reliability, and service isolation: This solution uses the physical isolation of wavelength, ODUk, and VC to ensure high service bearing security and flexible soft and hard pipes.
  • Flexible investment and on-demand bandwidth adjustment: This solution uses smart 100G boards innovatively to enable bandwidth on demand and flexible expansion to further protect investment.
  • Joe Zhou, Vice President of Huawei Transmission Product Line, said: “In the past two years, Huawei’s OTN solution has made breakthroughs in Shanghai Metro’s upper-layer high-speed network, Guangzhou Police’s upper-layer network, and Shenzhen Metro’s dedicated system bearing project on Line 6/10. The new Smart 100G Enhanced MS-OTN solution has integrated a greater understanding of the subway industry to guarantee network security and more intelligent and flexible features. We hope to work with Guangzhou Metro Group again to build the most secure infrastructure network for public transportation.”

“Over the past few years, I’ve witnessed Huawei’s continuous innovation in the transportation industry, growing from a relatively minor player to the outright industry leader,” said Wu Hao, Vice Director of Communications Institute at CRSCD, a subsidiary of China Railway Signal & Communication. “It is a great honor today to witness the release of Huawei’s Smart 100G Enhanced MS-OTN solution for the transportation industry. This solution is oriented to various subway services and provides reliable and high-quality bearing services. It also provides a larger expansion space to meet the industry’s various development requirements. Huawei is fully prepared to help subway owners and design institutes build a reliable, secure, interconnected, intelligent, and efficient urban transportation system in the coming era of big data, cloud computing, and AI.”

Huawei is committed to working with customers in the long term and takes a future-oriented approach to drive enterprise digital transformation through the power of the platform. So far, 211 of the Fortune Global 500 companies (including 48 Fortune Global 100 companies) have selected Huawei as their digital transformation partner.
