Huawei Unveils Industry EC-IoT Solution and OpenLab

Oct 16, 2018

[Shanghai, China, October 16, 2018] During HUAWEI CONNECT 2018, Huawei released the Industry Edge Computing – Internet of Things (EC-IoT) Solution. Based on EC and Power Line Communications (PLC) technologies, the solution quickly adapts to the intelligent data processing requirements, facilitating service innovation and efficient operation in sectors such as transportation and electric power.

The number of connected IoT devices will exceed 30 billion by 2020, with a market space of US$1.9 trillion. However, the IoT still faces multiple challenges of large-scale application implementation in the industry. For example, complex deployment environments hinder connection establishment; front-end devices lack intelligence and cannot keep pace with real-time data analysis and processing; and it is often difficult to deploy and manage such a large number of IoT devices and applications. To address these challenges, Huawei launched the Industry EC-IoT Solution to resolve the difficulties encountered in IoT technology implementation in the industry. This solution stands out with the following highlights:

Abundant IoT Interfaces and PLC for Cost-Effective, Efficient IoT

Huawei’s Industry EC-IoT Solution supports more than 17 types of IoT interface protocols to adapt to various complex industry scenarios. By leveraging PLC technology, this solution can reuse power lines to build a high-speed and reliable IoT network, without the need of digging extra trenches for burying cables. In typical scenarios, Huawei’s Industry EC-IoT Solution reduces communication construction costs by more than 50 percent and significantly shortens the deployment period.

Open Edge Computing Supports Intelligent Data Processing at the Edge of Different Industries

Based on the edge computing capability of open gateways, Huawei’s Industry EC-IoT Solution quickly adapts to the intelligent data processing requirements on an “edge intelligence + cloud-based management” platform. In this manner, the solution responds to key services within milliseconds, implements local data aggregation and optimization, and proactively returns high-value data to the cloud.

Open “Huawei Inside” Business Model Implements Optimal IoT Integration Management

With the open “Huawei Inside” business model, Huawei’s Industry EC-IoT Solution integrates IoT communication modules and software platforms and opens up software and hardware interfaces as well as Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Industry partners can integrate Huawei’s chips into IoT devices and industry systems through secondary development to provide complete products and solutions for industry customers. To further expand upon “Huawei Inside,” Huawei focuses on communications platform technologies, and industry partners focus on customer services. As such, this type of cooperation helps build an open and healthy industry ecosystem to deliver optimal solutions for digital transformation of industry customers.

Huawei’s Industry EC-IoT Solution has been widely used in various industries, such as smart transportation for highways, smart airfield ground lighting for airports, smart meter reading, the Internet of elevators, and smart buildings.

  • In the transportation industry, Huawei and its partners, including Anhui Keli Information Industry Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Rongheng Group Co., Ltd., and Chongqing ETCS Technology Co., Ltd., developed a smart transportation traffic light solution. This solution resolves the network signal transmission issues of transportation devices using PLC technology. This avoids digging roads when new devices are installed at intersections. The construction for the smart transportation system takes 50 percent less time with 27 percent lower costs. Huawei’s open edge computing platform implements local pre-processing of intersection data and efficient linkage between service systems, including intersection traffic lights, e-Police, traffic guidance system, and traffic information collection system. This solves many problems such as independent system construction, difficultly in data sharing, and lack of intelligent linkage — all to improve front-end system utilization by at least double.
  • In the electric power industry, Huawei cooperates with Shenzhen Energy Sales & Service Co., Ltd. to develop a smart charging pile solution. The traditional wired (such as RS485) or wireless (such as ZigBee) deployment mode may bring different problems of high interference, low bandwidth, and short-distance transmission, or difficult cabling and high costs, respectively. Huawei PLC technology can perfectly resolve these problems, improve the communications reliability of charging piles, and simplify deployment. Additionally, Huawei’s open edge computing platform is leveraged to implement charging pile protocol conversion, charging monitoring, and remote unified management of charging piles, significantly reducing Operating Expenses (OPEX).

“EC-IoT is committed to addressing the last-mile access challenge for industries and aims to build an open platform based on edge intelligence plus cloud-based management,” said Zeng Xingyun, Director of the Network Solution Dept. at Huawei. “Based on ‘Huawei Inside,’ we established the EC-IoT OpenLab to further collaborate with partners, construct a healthy cooperative ecosystem, and facilitate digital transformation across industries.”

Huawei is one of the founding members of the Edge Computing Consortium (ECC) and works with GE and Infosys to develop End-to-End (E2E) applications. The ECC aims to build a platform for edge computing cooperation and incubate innovative practices of industry applications to accelerate digital transformation of industries, including for smart cities, manufacturing, and electric power. The ECC now has more than 154 members.
