[Dubai, UAE, October 12, 2022] Huawei launched its latest solutions for customs and port industries at HUAWEI CONNECT 2022 Dubai. This marks the company's latest progress in supporting the digital transformation of customs and ports after it set up a dedicated Customs & Port BU last year.
Robin Lu, Senior Vice President and COO of Huawei Customs & Port BU.
Huawei has established long-term, sound partnerships with enterprises in the Middle East and has successfully helped many of them go digital. "The Customs & Port BU draws on Huawei's extensive ICT R&D experience and fundamental technologies to promote and replicate successful ICT products and scenario-based solutions. In this way, we support the trade infrastructure — customs and port infrastructure in particular — in the Middle East, achieving modernization alongside digital and smart development," said Robin Lu, Senior Vice President and COO of Huawei Customs & Port BU.
The BU recently ran a survey to understand the current conditions of ports around the world. Robin Lu explained that one of key findings is that many traditional ports have complicated customs clearance processes and still rely on manual review and release of cargo. This results in low efficiency, poor collaboration, and ineffective supervision. "To address these issues, Huawei has designed solutions to enable openness, easy control, fast access, and quality services," highlighted Robin Lu.

Smart Gate: Huawei's smart gate solution tackles challenges in port customs clearance. It builds and manages port checkpoints, using a "1 + N" — one HQ plus many branches — architecture to help customs HQ centrally manage multiple ports and checkpoints at branches. It visualizes the alarms across sites and collects asset statistics. Plus, the platform centrally supervises all ports, so users can view many checkpoint details, including vehicle statistics, efficiency analysis, and customs clearance status.
Smart ICT Infrastructure: Ports are digitalizing their supervision processes because legacy ICT infrastructure simply cannot keep up with trade growth. Huawei's smart campus network solution improves network service capabilities, simplifies network deployment and maintenance, and enhances cyber security. Aligned with the customs management architecture, the data center solution features a three-level "1 + N + M" architecture (1 HQ data center, N branch data centers, and M port edge nodes). This approach has four key advantages: efficient collaboration between HQ and branches, centralized security control, unified operations and O&M, and a lightweight and simplified design.
Ports represent the key infrastructure for international trade and global economic growth. Huawei believes digitalization is both a challenge and an opportunity.

Remote Control with an Optical Network: Conventional terminal operations are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Huawei's remote control solution for Quay Cranes (QCs) and Yard Cranes (YCs) relies on an optical network. Operators can work remotely from air-conditioned rooms in urban areas, enjoying more safety and comfort as well as shorter commutes. The optical solution features high bandwidth, low latency, enhanced security and reliability, simplicity, and easy O&M. Plus, Huawei provides 5G solutions for Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes or cranes where optical fibers are difficult to deploy. As such, it implements remote crane control within port areas, centralized remote control across ports, and resource collaboration.
Smart Production Security: Safety and security are critical at ports. Huawei provides the smart production security solution centered on port groups and featuring a two-layer smart command center. The solution uses one GIS map to control the entire port in real time. The solution also visualizes, manages, and controls emergency handling from start to finish, significantly improving efficiency.
Smart Tally: As a key link in port production and operations, intelligent tally is vital for port intelligence and automation. Huawei has launched an intelligent tally solution to improve efficiency. It delivers four times better reasoning performance than the average industry solution, facilitating efficient and secure tally services.
Smart ICT Infrastructure: Huawei has launched scenario-specific network solutions — including terminal production campus network, port office campus network, and port WAN — in response to the varying needs and working conditions of ports. These solutions enable the digital transformation of port services and facilitate smart port construction. Huawei has also launched group and terminal data center solutions, providing simplified, intelligent, secure, and efficient infrastructure.
Showroom Site
Under the theme of Smart Port and Smart Customs, Huawei exhibited its digital innovations and achievements at the expo at GITEX Global 2022. The expo attracted a range of visitors, including our customers and partners from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Libya, industry thought leaders, business executives, technical experts, pioneer enterprises, and global media.
Huawei's Customs & Port BU is committed to integrating the company's leading ICTs — such as AI, big data, and cloud — to deepen its understanding of customer needs and respond to them faster.
"Huawei will continue using its digital capabilities alongside one-stop solutions developed with partners to help customs authorities become more efficient and better control risks. We are also enabling higher efficiency at ports through global connectivity, in hopes of helping the global economy quickly recover and facilitating global trade," said Robin Lu.
