Leading Innovation in Digital Infrastructure, for a Digital and Sustainable APAC

2023-05-25

From public utilities and transportation to education and public health, infrastructure lies at the very foundation of national economic development. Indeed, for every forward step human society has made, infrastructure has always played an extremely important — nay, critical — role. As we accelerate toward the intelligent world, digital infrastructure therefore has a central part to play.

A Prosperous Digital Economy Requires Strong Digital Infrastructure

The digital economy has become a key force for economic growth and social development. Ongoing innovation in digital technologies is now essential in order to support its expansion.

Going further, in-depth integration of digital technologies with industrial manufacturing and office scenarios is not only a way for industry to move toward smart manufacturing, and for enterprises to embrace intelligence, it's also an important engine for economic recovery.

Oxford Economics, a leader in global forecasting and quantitative analysis, teamed up with Huawei to develop a new approach to measuring the impact of digital technology on economic performance. The resulting Digital Spillover report noted that, over the previous three decades, for every US$1 of investment in digital technology, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by US$20. By way of comparison, every US$1 of investment made outside technology only boosted GDP by a meager US$3. That's a big difference.

With the increasingly rapid pace of digital transformation investment creating economic momentum, global market intelligence firm the International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the digital economy will continue to accelerate, with over 65% of Asia Pacific (APAC) GDP expected to be digitalized by 2023. Total spending over the period 2020–23 will amount to some US$1.2 trillion.

In the future, industries will inevitably focus on developing their own digital capabilities, with increasing requirements for digital, cloud-based, and intelligent development. In this process, digital infrastructure upgrades have become the key to introducing digital technologies into more and more core office scenarios and production processes.

The Time Is Now

Digital infrastructure, of course, includes communications network infrastructure — including 5G, Fifth-Generation Fixed Network (F5G), Internet Protocol version 6+ (IPv6+), the Internet of Things (IoT), and the Industrial Internet — alongside computing infrastructure, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), storage, computing, and data centers.

Digital infrastructure is based on data and supports End to End (E2E) data activities, including data collection and perception, real-time transmission and distribution, storage, computing and processing, mining, analytics, and decision-making.

According to Huawei's Global Industry Vision (GIV), by 2030, global connections will top 200 billion, monthly data per cellular user will grow 40 times to 600 GB, worldwide general computing volume will grow 10 times over, and data generated will increase by a factor of 23, reaching one yottabyte — shortened to YB — for the first time ever.

It should be abundantly clear: the time to build robust digital infrastructure is now.

Leading Digital Infrastructure Innovation

Huawei is dedicated to digital infrastructure innovation and hopes to help bring digitalization into core office scenarios and production processes, as well as enable more enterprises with digital technologies, accelerating the arrival of a fully connected and intelligent world.

At HUAWEI CONNECT 2021, the company announced breakthrough innovations in several domains, providing a first look at its comprehensive digital infrastructure portfolio. Several of these innovations were completely new and had never been seen before outside of Huawei's own laboratories. As such, these products and solutions are set to play a leading role, shaping digital infrastructure over the next decade.

Digital Meeting Rooms: Bridging the World with Seamless Gigabit Collaboration

Digital workspaces are a fundamental step toward improving productivity. The global pandemic, as we know only too well, has further accelerated their importance. Now, working wirelessly from anywhere is the norm and digital meeting rooms, especially ones that can offer real-time online collaboration for both working and teaching, are urgently needed in many industries.

Such spaces, of course, place very high demands on digital infrastructure. Recognizing this fact, Huawei launched its latest iteration of AirEngine — the AirEngine 6761-22T Access Point (AP) — the industry's fastest Wi-Fi 6E product. Through the use of cutting-edge technology, such as Smart Antennas and a triple-radio design, gigabit everywhere is enabled and everything is connected.

When used alongside HUAWEI IdeaHub, a next generation videoconferencing and collaboration tool designed for smart offices, enterprises effectively supercharge the digital meeting room experience. Indeed, IdeaHub's six-in-one design and powerful capabilities usher in an era of frictionless communication and collaboration, bridging geography to bring users together no matter their physical location.

The Industry's First Deterministic IP Network Solution

Instability and jitter are among the biggest issues impacting service assurance and network architecture, hindering the digital transformation process across industries.

After years of breakthroughs in fundamental and foundational technologies, Huawei has now brought the very first deterministic Internet Protocol (IP) network to market, dramatically minimizing network uncertainties. Through IP traffic and system engineering, jitter is slashed to just 30 µs, with single hop latency also at the microsecond level.

More importantly, by using an innovative label-based scheduling and adaptive cycle label mapping algorithm, Huawei is capable of building large-scale deterministic networks with on-campus switches, such as CloudEngine S6730, at the edge level, combined with the NetEngine 8000 router, offering a wide range of service deployment. This is critical for the manufacturing, transportation, and oil and gas industries, where a network needs to connect multiple physical locations, with services requiring assured network bandwidth and latency.

The Industry's Best Performing IP Network Solution for Cross-Regional Computing Resource Scheduling

When it comes to data center network Huawei's CloudEngine 16800 V3 Data Center Network (DCN) will arrive in 2022, including the innovative iLossless algorithm and new breakthroughs in IP-based scheduling. With these capabilities, the solution achieves zero packet loss, three times bigger server network scale, and also improves transmission efficiency by 30%.

This will bring big benefits to a range of industries, including the Financial Services Industry (FSI), Over The Top (OTT), manufacturing, oil and gas, advanced research institutes, national computing networks, and more, all of which require cross-regional computing resource scheduling.

Huawei OptiXsense: Accelerating Pipeline Inspection

Huawei is known for its innovations in optical access and for its long distance and highly secure transmission products. Now, such innovations are extended to sensors, to further support digital transformation.

The Huawei OptiXsense Solution is able to measure the vibration of a laser, sensing the environmental changes of any monitored object, significantly reducing the rate of false alarms that legacy solutions suffer, and accurately identifying the root cause of any issue.

This has been made possible through resolving the bottleneck of optical data collection with enhanced optical Digital Signal Processing (oDSP) modules. Huawei has also created a vibration ripple analysis engine that learns the patterns of vibrations through AI, greatly improving accuracy.

This solution helps manage long distance oil and gas pipelines as well as railway transportation infrastructure and other use cases, such as water monitoring.

H-OTN: Leading a Revolution in Secure Production Networks

In the energy industry, power grid digitalization is playing a big part in the move toward carbon neutrality. Of course, any power grid must have a 100% reliable network. Traditionally, Optical Transmission Networks (OTNs) are used to provide reliable communications for power transmission but they have yet to be used for distribution and E2E reliability.

Huawei's Hybrid-Optical Transmission Network (H-OTN) — the industry's first converged optical device that supports hard pipe technologies — introduces innovative Point-to-Multipoint (P2MP) OTN architecture to access networks.

Indeed, for the first time, Huawei has enabled an E2E hard pipe, from the access network to the Wide Area Network (WAN), using a redefined product architecture and converged protocols. This not only guarantees 100% security, but also reduces latency — by at least 60%. Huawei's H-OTN Solution provides highly reliable communications networks with ultra-low latency and simplified Operations and Maintenance (O&M), supporting digital transformation for industries such as electric power and transportation.

OceanStor Pacific: Ushering In an Era of HPDA

The significant growth of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI technologies also brings significant challenges to storage. Handling huge volumes of data in different protocols and sizes, as well as providing real-time data analytics, are major issues stalling industry growth.

OceanStor Pacific is the industry's first distributed storage for High Performance Data Analytics (HPDA), bringing huge breakthroughs in technical architecture, including data flows that are adaptive to large and small Input/Output (I/O), converged indexing for unstructured data, ultra-high-density hardware, and Erasure Code (EC) algorithms.

With this solution, a single storage unit improves the efficiency of data analytics by 30%, supporting hybrid workloads across HPC, big data analytics, and AI computing, breaking through the performance, protocol, and capacity barriers that typically limit HPDA.

As such, OceanStor Pacific has already been deployed in oilfields, and is set to accelerate the digital transformation of oil and gas exploration, creating digital basins and oilfields.

Nonstop Innovation: Creating More Value for Industries

Innovation is an ongoing process. Huawei will continue to push and break down barriers, exploring all potential breakthroughs — including in basic theories and algorithms — using new technologies across different fields to become a new engine for digitalization in diverse industries, accelerating the advent of the digital and intelligent era. In APAC, for APAC.
