Healthcare Services Are Transformed by All-Flash Storage

Starting as a small hospital in Istanbul, Acıbadem Healthcare Group has grown into a globally trusted healthcare provider that offers high-quality, accessible, patient-centered medical services internationally.

After opening that first hospital in 1991, Acıbadem now operates 24 hospitals in five countries, employing 22,500 healthcare professionals to provide high-quality healthcare services to more than 5 million patients every year.

The group's hospitals are equipped with the latest medical technology, managed by a diverse team of experts, including dedicated cancer, organ transplant, and robotic surgery centers. But, with growing amounts of healthcare data generated on a daily basis — all of which must be stored and managed efficiently, to support more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment plans, while offering around-the-clock access to doctors, nurses, and researchers — Acıbadem began to look to strengthen its data infrastructure and Hospital Information System (HIS) database. And, as it searched for a more agile, stable, and cost-effective data storage solution, the group found Huawei OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage.

All-Flash Innovation Makes a Significant Leap in Efficiency

• High Performance, Low Latency: To meet high data transmission and low latency requirements, OceanStor Dorado's high-performance all-flash storage products offer end-to-end Non-Volatile Memory express (NVMe) support with a dual-controller design. This ensures the instant access to a HIS that Acıbadem was looking for. Each controller is equipped with up to 1 TB of cache and 192 cores, providing robust processing power. This design delivers the industry's highest Central Processing Unit (CPU) count and cores within a single controller, ensuring powerful computational power. FlashLink® technology maximizes flash performance by ensuring coordination and connectivity between storage controllers and Solid-State Drives (SSDs).

• High Reliability: Architecturally, OceanStor Dorado products increase data reliability and business continuity, using next-generation hardware platforms and ultra-stable SmartMatrix fully connected architecture, with a dual-controller active-active structure. For example, the file system and Logical Unit Number (LUN) directly interact with the underlying storage pool. Compared to traditional architectures, this design offers the shortest Input/Output (I/O) path for both LUNs and file systems while providing independent space management, enhancing reliability.

• Uninterrupted Services: Upgrading the storage system of a medical system often requires restarting controllers and transitioning tasks between controllers. That's a real risk that can significantly affect performance and require extensive data collection and manual intervention. OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage allows for upgrades without the need to restart controllers, ensuring that controllers remain active, host connections stay intact, and tasks continue seamlessly.

• Future-Oriented Efficiency: To meet Acıbadem Healthcare Group's future business expansion needs, Huawei designed a flexible expansion solution supporting up to 32 controllers. This has allowed the group to use its storage system more efficiently, avoiding the need for additional investment.

• After-Sales Services: Huawei established a dedicated team of 10 service specialists based in Istanbul and Ankara, who provide Hi-Care support with Service Level Agreement (SLA) guarantees, ensuring that Acıbadem always reaps the benefits of Huawei's reliable data storage services.

"Since Acıbadem Healthcare Group adopted the OceanStor Dorado all-flash solution, the write speed of the core system storage is 40 times faster and the read speed is 60 times faster, compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. In addition to high performance, this solution is a pioneer in green energy savings, reducing Information Technology (IT) system power consumption by 50% and lowering maintenance costs by 65%."
