With overall responsibility for determining the policies and direction of the education system in the country, Malaysia's Ministry of Education (MOE) operates a wide range of public institutions that provide education and training for both educators and students.

The Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Ilmu Khas Campus is, for example, a teaching college under the MOE that trains educators before they are appointed to teach in schools. Located in the country's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, it is just one of a number of training campuses spread across the country. A large building offering plenty of classrooms and study halls, IPG Ilmu Khas Campus alone accommodates over 1000 future educators. And, with a mission to become a world-class teacher training institution, it's committed to elevating education standards through digital transformation.

Network Requirements and Challenges

The legacy network architecture of the campus consisted of a combination of wired and wireless networks but lacked centralized management of equipment and servers. The campus even had numerous Access Points (APs) that operated independently, with the lack of unified management, authentication, and configuration making fault detection difficult and time-consuming leading to inefficient communications network services, despite high maintenance costs.

This legacy network infrastructure also didn't support high-speed connections nor capacity expansion. It quickly became clear that an ultra-fast network was going to be crucial, to make the transition to online learning as smooth as possible, especially following on from the impact of COVID-19. Stated simply, IPG Ilmu Khas Campus needed to improve its network urgently.

Huawei CloudCampus Solution

To enable smarter, more efficient network architecture across campus, Huawei deployed its agile campus network solution — CloudCampus — a game-changing solution that features several industry-leading technologies unique to Huawei. Fully implemented in August 2020, the simplified, reliable system includes 43 campus switches, 265 Wi-Fi APs, and a range of cutting-edge power and management systems Huawei eSight Platform, Huawei iMaster NCE and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).

eSight Unified Management System: Huawei's Network Management System (NMS) supports the unified management of storage devices, servers, applications, switches, and routers. The platform helps ensure lower Operations and Maintenance (O&M) costs and far higher efficiency.

iMaster NCE Network Management and Analysis Software: Huawei's network resource control system offers unified, centralized Software-Defined Networking (SDN) management, easily meeting the requirements of large campuses.

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS): Huawei's energy efficient UPS power products are designed for large data centers, helping businesses handle increased data loads and also building in flexible capacity expansion.

Real-World Benefits

High-performance communication network infrastructure provided by Huawei now enables centralized, simplified control for management staff while delivering ultra-high-speed connectivity for all users working and studying at the IPG Ilmu Khas Campus.
