What Are the Advantages of SSDs Compared to HDDs?
▪ SSDs are more resilient than HDDs. HDDs are all-disk-type storage, where data is stored in magnetic disk sectors. SSDs are made of flash memory particles. They have no moving mechanical parts inside. This means that SSDs can continue to function even if they are physically moving at high speeds or if they are rolled over. SSDs minimize data loss in the event of collisions, shocks, and vibrations.
▪ SSDs write data faster than HDDs. HDDs write data at approximately 120 MB/s. NVMe SSDs — Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) 3.0 x 4 — write data at approximately 3500 MB/s.
▪ SSDs consume less power than HDDs.
▪ SSDs are smaller and lighter than HDDs.
▪ SSDs are quieter than HDDs. HDDs require a high-power motor to rotate at high speeds, which produces noise and heat. SSDs have no mechanical parts, so they don't generate as much noise and they dissipate heat faster.
An Introduction to SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC
▪ Single-Level Cell (SLC) flash memory stores one bit of data in each cell.
▪ Multi-Level Cell (MLC) flash memory stores two bits of data in each cell.
▪ Triple-Level Cell (TLC) flash memory stores three bits of data in each cell.
▪ Quad-Level Cell (QLC) flash memory stores four bits of data in each cell.
