TIS Builds Highly Reliable Backbone Network with Huawei to Deliver Exceptional User Experience

After the epidemic, consumers in Indonesia tend to spend online, and the proportion of online consumption has increased significantly. There is a big gap in the current situation of home broadband in Indonesia. How should TIS, as a trusted Internet service provider in Indonesia, deal with it?

Background

TIS: A Rising Network Service Provider in Indonesia

PT. Trans Indonesia Superkoridor (TIS for short) is a nationwide privately-run ISP in Indonesia with its headquarters in Jakarta which focuses on broadband and private line services. Founded in 2018, Currently the network coverage already covers major of indonesia cities starting from Java, Sulawesi, and on going expansion to Kalimantan, Bali, Nusa Tenggara and Sumatera. Since obtaining jaringan tetap local and ijin internet services provider license, The TIS fiber networks have rapidly expanded from 5000 km in 2021 to 25,000 km and now more than 25,000 subscribers already connected. Thanks to its stable, secure, and reliable network services, TIS is now widely recognized as a trusted ISP.

Challenges

TIS Needs a New IP Backbone Network for Strategic Development

In this era of digital transformation, the Internet touches every aspect of people's lives. Activities such as social networking, gaming, payment, and travel are increasingly shifting online. Similarly, business development methods across various industries — including remote office, e-commerce, teleconferencing, distance education, and telemedicine — are undergoing significant changes. As a result, the demand for network and data connectivity has become more pressing than ever before.

The pandemic has further driven up the demand for home broadband services as more people have shifted from traditional offline consumption to online platforms. Moreover, users have become more sensitive to service experience. In Indonesia, the strong preference for online consumption has resulted in a significant increase in the proportion of online consumption. Unfortunately, the current home broadband services are unable to meet the growing demand.

As digital transformation relies heavily on digital infrastructure, TIS aims to build a reliable ICT infrastructure that delivers high-quality network services to ensure user satisfaction.

Pain Points: Insufficient bandwidth and Poor Network Performance

The TIS's infrastructure and customer bandwidth demand is increasing rapidly. By 2022, it have reached around 15,000 km of fiber and 14,000 home connected. The existing backbone TIS network use switches which have limited performance, features, capabilities and cannot meet TIS requirement and future expansion. In addition, to handle 14,000 subscribers and beyond, TIS currently uses small BNG router with low performance. This makes TIS's network more complex because each city requires multiple BNG routers.

Pain Points: Hard-to-Operate Complex Networks, Making It Difficult to Guarantee SLAs for Key Services

The adoption of traditional Layer 2 VLANs further complicates networks, resulting in problems such as broadcast storms, loops, difficult traffic engineering, and difficult path protection.

Solutions

Building a Next-Generation Backbone Network with Huawei's SR-MPLS/Mini-BNG/CGNAT Solution

TIS pursues its digital development based on innovative ICT technologies provided by Huawei. With innovations in high reliability, converged device, and SDN-oriented evolution, TIS has built a secure and reliable backbone network with Huawei to achieve higher efficiency and deliver high-quality network experience.

High reliability: The reliability of the backbone network is enhanced by deploying the DWDM-based backbone ring, IP network, and submarine network. Efficient Topology-Independent Loop-free Alternate (TI-LFA) FRR protection is used for fast recovery of path failures. Furthermore, broadcast storm packets and loops are eliminated.

Converged device: Mini-BNGs adopt an innovative hardware architecture to provide PE, BNG, and CGNAT functions through different FPICs. This enables one device to provide the functions of multiple devices, simplifying topology and management. These FPICs can be used to expand CGN capacity to support massive inner-city network expansion, save scarce equipment room resources, and reduce energy consumption and emission.

SDN-oriented evolution: The evolution toward SDN networks can be achieved more smoothly with the combined use of SR/SRv6 and a centralized path computation module for flexible path control.

Commercial Value

Reliable Backbone Network for Superior Customer Experience

TIS's next-generation backbone network built by Huawei is highly reliable and stable, capable of delivering lower latency, higher network speed, and more intelligent O&M. It is expected to help TIS triple its revenue, regain a dominant market position in industrial and mining districts, deliver top-notch technology solutions with ultra-high network reliability to enterprise, government, and industrial park customers, and apply new technologies such as smart city.
