Customer Requirements & Challenges

Insufficient Storage Capacity

To improve competitiveness and continue to provide its customers with the best user experience, FTLife made the decision to upgrade its existing storage system for the following reasons:

  1. No Storage DR Solution: There was no disaster recovery (DR) solution at the storage level on the existing infrastructure. Only host level protection could be provided replicated whenever necessary.
  2. High TCO: System maintenance was very costly, due to legacy storage ownership, resulting in high Total Cost of Operations (TCO)
  3. Lack of rack space: Large footprint for existing infrastructure occupied most of the rack space in data centers. Capacity for back-up and archive storage was insufficient.
  4. Low Resilience: Unpredictable future growth on cross region business led to unforeseeable demand on infrastructure resources.

A multiple-purpose storage was necessary to serve VM farms, File services, back-up and archive systems.

OceanStor Storage

  1. Huawei’s OceanStor provides a gateway-free active-active storage solution, which guarantees nearly 100% reliability and enables 7*24 online service
  2. It supports a 3-Tier architecture separating disks in terms of disk types to meet various applications’ requirements in a more efficient way (e.g. SSD Tier for VMware services, SAS Tier for general purpose application and NL-SAS Tier for backup and archive)
  3. This system ensures a complete backup and archiving solution to meet clients’ needs

This technology enables to sync the core system file and ensure data resilience for mission critical system.

Customer Benefits

  • Better Service: Both the recovery time objective (RTO) and the recovery point objective (RPO) for disaster recovery reached the zero mark, enabling mission critical systems to provide 7*24 IT services.
  • Lower Total Cost of Operations (TCO): The new active-active storage infrastructure enabled FTLife to decrease its TCO by 30%
  • Better User Experience: User experience is greatly improved, especially in terms of storage performance and Graphical User Interface (GUI).
  • Better Efficiency: With the same rack space, the system provides an additional 300TB consumption for backup and archive tier
