Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Solution

Previously, employees had to travel to households monthly to collect meter data. Issues such as inaccurate metering, ineffective power theft prevention, long charging periods, and inaccurate line loss calculation often occurred, causing high O&M costs for utility.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) provides utility with a smart metering solution based on bi-directional high-speed communication. AMI reads data on remote electrical meters and realizes real-time charging. It also effectively prevents electricity theft through a complete user management system and analyzes line-loss statistics to achieve highly efficient operation.

The Huawei AMI Solution is based on IoT technologies and open architecture. Huawei and its partners provide an E2E solution that covers the terminal, network, platform, and application layers. Terminals and application software are provided by partners, with network communication, management and control component provided by Huawei.

  • Huawei AMI Solution Builds a More Efficient Power Grid 
    Terminal & Metering layer: Includes smart electrical meters and Data Concentrator Units (DCUs). Electrical meters use communication modes in different scenarios, including GPRS backhaul, aggregation to the DCU through RS485, Huawei Broadband PLC (PLC-IoT) or RF, and backhaul through the DCU. These support metering in different settings, such as residential, industrial, and commercial users, along with gateways of a transformer district.
    World-leading broadband PLC (PLC-IoT) at the application layer provides the rate larger than 2 Mbit/s, which is 20 times higher than the rate of narrowband PLC, and conforms to the IEEE P1901.1 standard. The daily metering success rate is improved from 80 percent to 100 percent, realizing real-time and bi-directional communication. The technology meets the full-data-collection and full-fee-control requirements of the future intelligent grid, and helps utility to explore business growth opportunities in home IoT.
    The DCU integrates routing, firewall, and VPN functions, provides data encryption, ensures data security, and can be used for power distribution automation, realizing power distribution and assumption integration.
    Network layer: Provides communication between the DCU and the platform layer. It offers wireless and wired networks in different regions under different scenarios. For example, xPON and MSTP networks and 3G networks, meeting the diversified requirements of customers.
    Management Control layer: The Management Control component provides standard data collection and control service and interface for application, including interface management, security management, log management, fault management, operation monitoring, device management, device data collection, and control service management.
    Application layer: The application layer is the power operation system. Based on electrical meter data provided by the platform layer, it provides advanced applications, such as prepayment, charging, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and line loss analysis.
