[Shenzhen, China, July 10, 2026] The AI for Good Global Summit 2026, hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with over 50 United Nations (UN) agencies, has announced the results of its case study selection. The project "AI Enhances Highway Traffic Management—Huawei's ITS Practice in Côte d'Ivoire" stood out from hundreds of global submissions and was selected for the AI for Good Innovate for Impact Report 2026. This recognition highlights Huawei's accomplishments in AI, inclusive technologies, and sustainable development, as endorsed by key UN international platforms.
AI for Good is the UN's leading AI exchange platform, focused on finding practical AI solutions to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each year, it invites governments, enterprises, and research institutions worldwide to submit case studies. Following rounds of rigorous technical reviews, social value assessments, and impact validations, the most innovative, feasible, and socially impactful projects are chosen.
The project "AI Enhances Highway Traffic Management—Huawei's ITS Practice in Côte d'Ivoire" serves the Urban Mobility Authority of Greater Abidjan (AMUGA) under Côte d'Ivoire's Ministry of Transport. It covers six highways totaling 1,114 kilometers. Abidjan's core road network has long struggled with frequent traffic violations like speeding and wrong-way driving, resulting in a high accident rate. Additionally, extensive cross-border traffic from regional connectivity challenges traditional license plate recognition systems, which only handle local formats. Power and network outages in remote areas further created blind spots in traffic management, increasing road safety risks.
This project was selected for the following innovations and benefits:
1. Inclusive and accessible intelligent recognition
A universal license plate recognition model, built on Transformer OCR, automatically adapts to multiple countries' plate formats with 99% accuracy. This eliminates the need to deploy multiple systems, lowers technical barriers and costs, and allows a single model to efficiently serve all cross-border vehicles, driving regional transportation integration and trade facilitation.
2. Green and resilient edge coverage
The project uses solar power and wireless self-networking, eliminating dependence on utility power and optical fibers. It electrifies and connects remote road sections, enabling comprehensive sensing across thousands of kilometers of highways. This approach extends monitoring to regions with limited infrastructure, reducing regional disparities while promoting sustainability and digital inclusion.
3. Closed-loop governance to protect lives
The project integrates traffic analysis, violation review, and penalty management to create a complete closed-loop law enforcement system. It precisely corrects dangerous driving behaviors and significantly lowers accident rates, especially protecting pedestrians and motorcyclists. This achieves the goal of "using AI to protect lives."
This project also combines green energy with intelligent governance to tackle challenges regarding international license plate recognition and edge coverage. It advances regional transportation integration, narrows the digital divide, boosts national public governance efficiency, and supports sustainable development. Offering a low-cost, scalable road safety solution, it balances efficiency and fairness, laying a safer, smoother foundation for economic growth in developing countries.
To date, Huawei has served road networks extending over 200,000 kilometers as well as ITS projects across over 70 cities, more than 100 ports, more than 210 airports and airlines, over 300 urban rail lines, over 180,000 kilometers of railways, and more than 200 logistics enterprises across the globe. Looking ahead, Huawei will continue practicing the "platform + ecosystem" strategy. The company specializes in developing transportation hubs, transportation networks, passenger/freight flows, and low-altitude air systems to establish a digital and intelligent foundation for comprehensive transportation and logistics. Huawei is committed to "driving mobility and logistics into the intelligent world," empowering smart transportation.
