Huawei Helps Etisalat Virtualize Data Center

13.07.2015 00:00:00

A subsidiary of UAE Etisalat, Etisalat Misr is one of three providers of mobile communication services in Egypt and the first to deploy a 3.5G network in the country. Etisalat Misr also provides fixed-network services and owns two ISPs.

Etisalat Misr needed to migrate its data center to a new site and wanted to take advantage of this migration to implement a new IT architecture that supports the evolution of future cloud data centers and carrier service transformation. The company also wanted to simplify the IT infrastructure and increase the virtualization rate to 80% or higher, reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) while providing better services.

Etisalat Misr needed a new data center architecture that would meet current and future requirements. The company faced the additional challenge of migrating existing services to this new data center in a way that ensured service continuity and protected all data assets.

Huawei developed an end-to-end IT transformation solution and helped Etisalat Misr evaluate solutions for Physical/Virtual (P/V) migration (P2P, P2V, and V2V) and database migration. Huawei’s project management assistance helped ensure service continuity and maintenance of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) during the migration. The project took advantage of migration services for devices still under warranty from the manufacturer to help make the migration more cost-effective. Huawei provided the expertise to ensure that the solutions suited requirements for the network (which included a microwave link); consistency and security of data; and data backup.

In preparing the architecture for future data centers, Huawei replaced some legacy storage with a Huawei V3 storage system. Huawei also replaced many of Etisalat Misr’s outdated Oracle/Sun mid-range computers with standard x86 platforms, including the FusionSphere cloud operating system, E9000 blade servers, and FusionCube converged computing/storage/network system.

The data center migration brought Etisalat Misr an evolvable cloud data center architecture with a system virtualization rate greater than 80%. This migration also simplified the IT infrastructure by integrating legacy storage systems into the Huawei V3 storage platform and standardizing servers on the x86 platform.
