Founded in 1973, China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau (CPP for short) is a professional pipe engineering company subordinate to China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). With the philosophy of unlimited creation and devotion in mind, CPP adheres to the core values of challenge, refinement, innovation, teamwork and harmony. CPP is committed to becoming a first-class international pipeline project contractor both in and outside China, constructing strategic oil and gas pipelines for the country, providing services and support for the company in its efforts to become an international comprehensive energy corporation, and creating wealth and value for customers, employees and the society as a whole.
Since 2000, CPP has constructed more than 60,000 km long-distance pipelines in and out of China and 20 million cubic-meter storage depots for the country and enterprises. In China, CPP participated as a leading team in the construction of a series of pipelines, such as West-East Gas Pipeline Project, West-East Gas Pipeline Project (Line 2), West-East Gas Pipeline Project (Line 3), China-Myanmar Oil and Gas Pipeline Project, Sebei-Xining-Lanzhou Gas Pipeline Project, Sebei-Xining-Lanzhou Gas Pipeline Project (Line 2), Shaanxi-Beijing Gas Pipeline Project (Line 2), Shaanxi-Beijing Gas Pipeline Project (Line 3), Lanzhou-Yinchuan Gas Pipeline Project, Zhongxian-Wuhan Gas Pipeline Project, Zhongwei-Guiyang Gas Pipeline Project, Lanzhou-Zhengzhou-Changsha Gas Pipeline Project, West Crude and Refined Oil Pipeline Project, Lanzhou-Chengdu-Chongqing Refined Oil Pipeline Project, Jinzhou-Zhengzhou Refined Oil Pipeline Project, Mohe-Daqing Refined Oil Pipeline Project, and Lanzhou-Chengdu Crude Oil Pipeline Project. Apart from these projects, CPP also constructed the strategic oil depot in Jinzhou, the first underground depot that CNPC had built. Outside China, CPP constructed more than 90 oil or gas pipeline of nearly 20,000 km as well as tank projects in Sudan, Libya, Mozambique, India, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, UAE, Chad, Niger, Myanmar, Iraq and Kenya, establishing the image of the CPP international brand.


CPP has two data centers: CPP Data Center and Pipeline Design Institute Data Center. The two centers are physically separated, resulting in resource waste. For this reason, CPP wanted to reduce the investment on servers on the basis of meeting service growth requirements, achieve fast deployment and on-demand allocation, and construct a virtualization platform at the service layer. CPP wanted to build, based on the VMware Infrastructure, a virtual data center tailed to CPP's service requirements and provide secure and reliable IT infrastructure services for its headquarters and secondary branches. High-availability support services were to be provided for global applications and large software. Apart from the existing CPP Data Center and Pipeline Design Institute Data Center, a remote data center was required to serve as the third site. In this way, an active-active storage platform could be constructed with a distance of at least 30 km in between. The platform can ensure zero data loss, high availability of application services, and data consistency and integrity when CPP encounters a disaster. 

Huawei Solution

The CPP two-place three-center disaster recovery system includes the intra-city active-active data center: CPP Data Center, Pipeline Design Institute Data Center, third-party quorum site, and remote disaster recovery center. The general construction includes an active-active DC of the cloud platform, a data backup system of the cloud platform, and a remote DR system.
The intra-city active-active data center is composed of virtual gateway devices (VIS) and disk arrays for the core service systems of CPP Data Center and Pipeline Design Institute Data Center to access at the same time. Two high-end storage systems were deployed in the two data centers respectively, providing highly efficient and reliable storage access capabilities for the two data centers. 
Different data protection solutions were designed for services at different levels based on the classification of core CPP services. In this way, systems processing critical services could obtain and switch over resources efficiently so that Level 1 services could satisfy the RPO requirement and be switched over automatically with the specified RTO. In addition, this method could also prevent systems processing non-critical services from competing for the disaster recovery bandwidth against systems processing critical services. When VMware is deployed, priority can be set to different virtual machines based on the type and class of services. In ESX fault switchover, priority shall be given to ensure resources and startup time for critical services.

A physical tape library (PTL) and a virtual tape library (VTL) were deployed in the CPP Data Center. Both the PTL and VTL are combined with backup software to back up all data in the intra-city active-active data center, including application data, virtual machine files, files selected by the server, archive data, and database data. A backup fiber channel was established between CPP Data Center and Pipeline Design Institute Data Center and the VLT was mapped through the channel to servers in the two centers so as to establish high-speed LAN-Free network and archive the VLT data to the PLT for permanent storage. 
To simplify the management of the remote DR center, the storage devices were not deployed the remote DR center. Physical tapes were transferred regularly to the remote DR center for storage and disaster recovery. The following figure shows the overall solution architecture:

Customer Benefits

Huawei active-active data center solution provides a mirrored volume that can be accessed in sharing mode. Active-active data centers are constructed based on the VMware. The customer can migrate virtual machines between the data centers and do not need to shut down devices or stopping services when maintaining hardware. This solution fully meets the customer's requirements for virtual data center construction. Additionally, the mirroring function in this solution enables each write request of service hosts to be written to the both data centers in real time. If a data center fails, the other one can take over services, ensuring zero data loss, protecting information assets, and meeting the customer's requirements for enhanced data security.
