What Kind of DCI Solutions Do ISP Customer Needs

What is an ISP?

An ISP, Internet service provider, provides bandwidth leasing, data center hosting, and Internet traffic forwarding services for users.ISPs are divided by service flow into three typical categories: OTT, MTDC, and IXP.

  • Typical services of OTT are search, portals, social networking, entertainment, e-commerce, games, for example, Google, Alibaba, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Yahoo, Skype, Amazon, Tencent, Yandex, and Baidu.
  • Typical services of MTDC are data center renting, bandwidth leasing, enterprise leased lines, cloud services (IaaS in the main), for example, 365 Data Centers, 21Vianet, American Internet Services, Equinix, and 1-Net.
  • Typical services of IXP are network connectivity and data switching between different ISPs, for example, AMS-IX.

Different ISPs Have Different Requirements on Networks

1. The DCI networks of OTT are mainly used to implement data synchronization and disaster recovery between DCs within one city. The requirements on such networks are as follows:

IDC

  • Large bandwidth: Only 100G and beyond 100G carrying capacities can accommodate for DC growth.
  • DCI is the optimal choice for data center equipment rooms: 19-inch rack, AC power supply, heat dissipation by front air inlet and back air outlet, low power consumption.
  • IT-based O&M: various kinds of pluggable components supporting plug-and-play, T-SDN architecture and open software interface for quick device integration into existing network systems.

2. MTDCs have large scale networks including backbone and metro networks, and have abundant service access types. They have the following requirements on networks:

Backbone

  • Long-haul transmission: The backbone transmission distance is long and therefore the requirements on transmission performance are high.
  • Smooth evolution: features smooth evolution to 100G/200G networks, supporting continuous development of customer services.
  • Multi-service unified carrying: supports access of 2M to 100GE services, meeting different customer requirements.
  • Easy O&M: provides simplified O&M management, easing optical platform maintenance.

3. IXP networks are relatively simple and focus on point-to-point transmission. They have the following requirements on networks:

Metro DC

  • Large bandwidth to address the needs of an interconnected city and save fiber resources
  • Short-distance transmission and good transmission performance
  • Rapid equipment deployment and easy management
