Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd. (ICBC) is one of the country’s Big Four banks and the largest commercial bank in China. ICBC offers financial products and services for almost 5 million corporate customers and 432 million individual customers through outlets that include 17,000 branches in China, 329 branches outside China, and nearly 2,000 agents. ICBC uses electronic payment systems such as online, telephone, and self-service banking. In 2013 and 2014, ICBC ranked first on Forbes’ Global 2000 list of the world’s biggest public companies. In 2014, it ranked first in Fortune’s Global 500 banks.
Twenty-first century computerized, Internet-based financial services have greatly changed the operating models of financial institutions, and present great challenges to traditional finance.
To support complex service methods and meet customer requirements, ICBC constructed an IT system supported by data warehouses. The data system provided a basic service platform for Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and finance, performance, risk, and information management, as well as customized services including customer analysis and precision marketing.
The bank’s Beijing and Shanghai data centers were based on platforms for core production, disaster recovery, and test systems. However, ICBC needed to consolidate its IT system with the following server requirements:
ICBC chose Huawei’s FusionServer RH5885 V3 4U four-socket servers. The RH5885 V3 servers provide chip-level, fault-tolerant features such as automatic CPU and link recovery. They also support dozens of Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) features, ensuring stable system operation.
The maximum number of cores per processor has increased from 10 to 15, and cache capacity has increased from 30 MB to 37.5 MB. Total processor performance has increased by 200 percent compared with previous-generation processors. The RH5885 V3 can be configured with Huawei ES series PCIe Solid-State Drives (SSDs) and I/O performance eliminates disk bottlenecks.
Huawei not only streamlined the ordering and manufacturing processes, but also transported the RH5885 V3 servers to ICBC’s data centers by air to meet the bank’s fast delivery and deployment requirements.
After strict proof-of-concept tests and trial use, Huawei’s FusionServer RH5885 V3 servers were successfully put into use in the data centers of the ICBC head office to support multiple core services. Benefits included:
ICBC and Huawei’s cooperation helped the bank alleviate the shortage of IT resources and laid a solid foundation for continuous service development.
