Optical Communication Network for Smart Railways

Trains are running faster and more frequently than ever before. A variety of modern railway services need higher bandwidth. Meanwhile, assuring safety and smooth dispatching requires a low latency coupled with high reliability. Plus, legacy interfaces must be integrated with the new infrastructure while physically isolating various service systems.

Huawei has designed an all-optical network uniquely tailored to the needs of smart railways. It ensures security, reliability, and stability across railway services.

Our single network can carry a multitude of services — such as PCM, SDH, OTN, and Ethernet — which centrally access the MS-OTN platform. Then, the services are isolated using different cross-connect planes, ensuring their protection. Also, our MS-OTN supports large-capacity transmission by expanding wavelength-level hard pipes, delivering a stable and low latency.

• Hard pipes centrally carry railway signaling, video backhaul, intra-station Wi-Fi access, office, and other services, which are also physically isolated.
• The time division multiplexing (TDM) technology and L1 AES256 encryption ensure secure signal transmission.

• Multi-plane static cross-connections and direct transmission of wavelengths at a low latency ensure stable, jitter-free production and train control signals.
• Single-fiber bidirectional transmission of IEEE 1588v2 clock synchronization signals eliminates the need for delay compensation.
