Yalong Hydro and Huawei Build China's First AI Model for Hydro-Wind-Solar Integrated Operations

Chengdu, China

[Chengdu, China, July 25, 2026] Yalong River Hydropower Development Company (Yalong Hydro), together with Huawei and other partners, officially launched China's first AI model designed for hydro-wind-solar integrated operations. This marks a new milestone for the intelligent management of 10-million-kW clean energy bases.

Leveraging advanced hardware and software in the form of TaiShan servers, Atlas AI accelerators, Huawei Cloud Stack, and the Pangu Weather Model, the team built a dedicated, integrated application platform tailored to the river basin. The platform comprises multiple service agents that address core operational areas, including meteorological and runoff forecasting, multi-energy coordinated scheduling, intelligent plant O&M, and power market risk control. Together, these capabilities enable a full-chain intelligent operations system for the basin's 10-million-kW clean energy bases. The solution sets a new industry standard for the "AI+" initiative in large-scale river basin clean energy development, offering a replicable Yalong solution for similar projects nationwide.

Sun Wenliang, Chairperson of Yalong Hydro, said in his speech at the launch event that the Yalong River Basin, rich with abundant resources, is China's first hydro-wind-solar integrated power generation base. With an installed clean energy capacity of 23 million kW, Yalong Hydro serves as a pillar for Sichuan's power supply. The company's development of China's first AI model for hydro-wind-solar integrated operations in the basin is not only a breakthrough in scientific and technological innovation but also a pilot project for the intelligent transformation of large-scale clean energy bases. Looking ahead, Yalong Hydro will continue to deepen the integration of AI and energy, expand application scenarios, and strengthen collaboration with other companies to help establish Sichuan as a demonstration hub for AI-powered energy, contributing to national energy security and low-carbon development.

Gu Xuejun, President of Huawei Hybrid Cloud, noted in his speech that the Yalong River weather forecasting model was developed and deployed using Huawei Cloud Stack and the Pangu weather model. The team has not only integrated mechanism models from the energy sector but also incorporated the unique, extensive clean energy operational data accumulated over years from the Yalong River Basin, creating a dedicated AI foundation tailored to Yalong Hydro. This standardized, replicable, and scalable AI solution for hydro-wind-solar integrated power generation provides a proven approach for the digital and intelligent transformation of 10-million-kW clean energy bases across China.

Huawei's Comprehensive Computing Foundation Provides Core Technical Foundation for AI Model

The intelligent operations model marks a milestone in the collaborative innovation between Huawei and Yalong Hydro under the "AI + Energy" initiative, aimed at building a digital and intelligent framework for clean energy operations. Huawei supplies the model with essential technical support, including the underlying computing power, localized deployment platform, and an all-scenario intelligent application system.

The Yalong River basin is characterized by high-altitude terrain, complex and variable hydrological conditions, and widely dispersed water, wind, and solar power generation facilities. Conventional weather forecasting methods often lack sufficient accuracy, and multi-energy coordinated scheduling remains a challenging task. To tackle these issues, Huawei has developed customized technical solutions: an intelligent computing cloud platform, scenario-specific applications, an agent hub framework, and full-lifecycle management. These solutions provide robust underlying support to ensure the stable and efficient operation of the model.

For the cloud platform, Huawei Cloud Stack delivers an integrated AI computing foundation, incorporating the Atlas AI computing cluster, OceanStor scale-out storage, and Xinghe AI Fabric high-speed network. This unified architecture enables seamless coordination among compute, networking, and storage resources, allowing for the dynamic, on-demand allocation of computing power to efficiently support both long-term model training and real-time inference.

Building on this intelligent computing foundation, Huawei has introduced models including DeepSeek and Qwen, and completed the localized deployment of the DeepSeek series on its intranet. This has enabled the integration of all-domain data spanning weather forecasting, hydrology, plant equipment, electricity trading, and safe production, establishing a unified AI application platform that drives AI adoption across all business functions.

Leveraging this common model foundation, the partners have jointly innovated in hydro-wind-solar integrated management and decision-making, covering weather forecasting, power dispatching, production operations, and electricity marketing. As a result, the 10-million-kW clean energy base is now empowered with intelligent decision-making capabilities, enabling more accurate weather forecasts, more scientific power dispatching, more efficient production operations, and smarter marketing strategies.

Industry-first AI Model for Hydro-Wind-Solar Integrated Operations Sets Benchmark for Scalability

The AI model for hydro-wind-solar integrated operations at Yalong Hydro is an innovative practice that deeply integrates meteorological research, the energy industry, and computing technologies. Built on Huawei's comprehensive AI solutions, the model streamlines the entire service chain, covering weather forecasting, runoff prediction, wind and solar power forecasting, cascade reservoir scheduling, and electricity market trading. This effectively enhances the O&M capabilities, operational efficiency, and system resilience of the hydro-wind-solar integrated power management system in the river basin.

Looking ahead, Huawei will continue to deepen its long-term collaboration with Yalong Hydro and industry partners, iterating the model's scheduling algorithms and advancing the AI agent hub for the river basin. Huawei plans to promote this integrated solution, combining Huawei Cloud Stack, the Pangu weather model, and multi-energy collaboration, to other large-scale clean energy bases across China. By leveraging digital and intelligent technologies, Huawei aims to accelerate the development of new power systems, helping achieve China's carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals.
