10 GE Network Advances Scientific Research

Background 

A national research institute needed its network to be flexible, reliable, and powerful, and capable of sharing scientific information with other institutes. Managers also realized that China’s new National Center for Protein Science (Shanghai) — NCPSS — required an advanced communications network to ensure quality services for protein research projects as well as the institute’s core service operations. 

The NCPSS campus is located at a high-tech park near several research institutes and scientific facilities in Shanghai. The campus is comprised of five buildings with about 1,000 information points. 

Challenges

NCPSS wanted to build a 10 GE campus with the following features: 

  • Optical fibers to connect all buildings for gigabit-to-the-desktop access and 10 Gbit/s bandwidth to each building 
  • Full wireless coverage for convenient, mobile access 
  • An advanced WAN interface and access solution that could manage the exponential growth in data traffic from other organizations and institutes 
  • A high-performance backbone network, specifically a high-performance computing subnet, for stable network operations 
  • High network and device throughput to transmit high-quality data and images 

Solution

NCPSS chose Huawei to participate in project planning and implementation. Huawei not only offered a campus network architecture capable of providing high-performance services, but also an appropriate reliability and security design that guaranteed stable operations. 

Huawei’s design uses a three-layer architecture of core, aggregation, and access layers to facilitate network expansion and management. 

Huawei CE12800 switches were installed on the core layer to ensure non-blocking forwarding and to provide management interfaces for the high-performance computing nodes. The CE12800 series switches also brought NCPSS fully into the 10 GE campus age. The hardware architecture separates the switching plane from the control plane and has a switching capacity of up to 64 Tbit/s that improves the packet forwarding rate. Line processing units and switch fabric units improve system performance. The large 12 GB buffers on inbound interfaces absorb burst traffic during peak hours. 

CE6800 switches were installed on the aggregation layer and S5700 switches on the access layer. 10G links were installed between each layer to avoid performance bottlenecks. 

Huawei also implemented: 

  • A reliable backup policy and network architecture with self-healing capabilities
  • Security devices and policies that protect important data from theft, tampering, and leaks
  • USG5500 firewalls that enforce security policies for service access, and unified network security policies ensure security of the entire network platform
  • Flexible access with systems such as an SSL VPN gateway and Wi-Fi
