In recent years, carriers have been affected by mobile Internet enterprises and Over-The-Top (OTT) services. The huge profits of the original SMS and call services have steadily diminished, forcing carriers to explore new business models to cope with the challenges brought by the Internet.

Hohhot Unicom is one of the largest telecom carriers and Internet Data Center (IDC) service providers in Hohhot, China. The decline of the company’s traditional voice and SMS services has resulted in lower profits as well as a large number of idle communications devices. Hohhot Unicom reconstructed its PSTN equipment rooms to actively embrace the Internet, but this adaptation led to a decrease in resource utilization and left a lot of unused space in the original communication building.

To leverage idle assets and vacant equipment rooms and meet Internet service requirements of small and medium-sized customers, Hohhot decided to build a centralized and standardized IDC to provide a comprehensive range of secure, reliable, and fast IDC services. From basic functionality to value-added services for a variety of users, Hohhot Unicom wanted to provide one-stop services for national linkage.

Hohhot Unicom chose Huawei’s FusionModule2000 Smart Modular Data Center Solution to build a future-oriented standard and centralized IDC.

In the company’s 320-square-meter data center area Huawei deployed six micro-modules and 102 IT cabinets. This installation includes a centralized Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with a 2N architecture, which provides two independent power supplies to the cabinets to ensure reliable power for the data center. Using inter-row cooling, each smart module has four air conditioners and 24 inter-row air conditioners to achieve high cooling efficiency and minimize power consumption.

The data center solution has a modular architecture and is pre-commissioned at the factory, reducing deployment time by more than 30 percent. The China Unicom Hohhot project was deployed in just one month. On-demand deployment can be implemented to handle future capacity expansion, which helps reduce the initial IDC investment.

Huawei’s FusionModule2000 Smart Modular Data Center Solution uses i³ technology to implement a green and reliable data center. An iPower system monitors and manages power supply links in real time. An iCooling algorithm implements refined collaborative control to improve the cooling efficiency by 30 percent. An iManager multi-system and multi-DC unified cloud management system supports mobile App O&M to reduce manual maintenance costs and improve O&M efficiency.


Huawei’s FusionModule2000 Smart Modular Data Center Solution implemented a high-quality Internet data center for Hohhot Unicom. Modularization reduces the restrictions on the old equipment room reconstruction, warehouse utilization, and outdoor data center deployment. In the new business model, fast deployment accelerates service rollout and shortens the gap between investment and payback.

The modular approach brings about a 10% improvement in the cabinet layout in a unit area. In this setup, the IT and infrastructure maintenance channels are reused to shorten the air supply distance and make cooling more efficient. In fact, Huawei’s design helps improve resource utilization, cooling efficiency, and O&M efficiency based on the company’s i³ concept.

For Hohhot Unicom, the IDC is complementary to the base IDC and serves as a remote disaster recovery service for the important services of large enterprises. At the same time, Hohhot Unicom is developing an eGovernment cloud to meet local government and enterprise customers’ requirements for low latency and local management.

In the future, ICT convergence will bring increased commonality between devices for Information Technology (IT) and Communications Technology (CT). The modular data center offers advantages for meeting the requirements of these hybrid scenarios.

Huawei’s intelligent modular Internet data centers provide carriers with vital industry transformation and meet long-term business goals. In this regard, Li Xiangdong, the director of the O&M department of China Unicom, said, “In the Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) era, we will embrace the trend of standardization and centralization of equipment rooms. By properly integrating and reconstructing equipment rooms and reducing site locations, we will gradually evolve traditional heavy assets and high energy consumption to standard IDCs. Reducing the PUE is the next step of the standard equipment room.”
