China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is an international energy company operating more than 20,000 gas stations and nearly 100 subsidiaries. Its main businesses include oil and gas exploration, oil equipment manufacturing, and technical and oil-related engineering and construction services. In 2013, CNPC ranked No. 4 among global top 50 oil companies and No. 5 on the Fortune 500 list.
CNPC’s business has grown rapidly and its legacy data centers are unable to meet capacity and disaster recovery needs. To cope, CNPC opted to build what will become Asia’s largest single-enterprise data center.
CNPC’s original data center and operating environment was complex and lacked the ability to perform some critical functions. With hundreds of existing service applications, it was necessary to integrate the architectures from the old and new networks so CNPC could centrally manage services. CNPC had several critical challenges in mind:

The data center meets local and remote disaster recovery requirements to ensure reliable, stable production operations with a 99.999% availability rate. In the event of a disaster, systems can lose zero data or continuity.

Huawei evaluated CNPC’s hundreds of service applications to identify network requirements, including:
Because of the number of legacy service applications and the need to add new disaster recovery functionality, the network integrates the old and new network architectures.
Depending on national, international, and enterprise standards and the old data center structure, Huawei determined the overall design principles and created two zone division models — one for intra-data center Layer 2 and 3 structures and a second two-place, three-center architecture to enable inter-data center communication using transmission and Layer 2 interconnection technologies.
Huawei created and lab-verified a high level design for CNPC’s review and a low level design and implementation plan based on the verification results.
CNPC opted for implementation at two places involving a huge number of devices. Huawei formulated detailed device delivery, installation, commissioning, and verification plans and unified the delivery through a demonstration site.
Huawei also conducted a service provisioning simulation test based on the solution and implementation.
CNPC received several important benefits.
More than 70 production, office, and operation systems are centrally deployed and physically isolated from one another.
The two-place, three-center network architecture and highly reliable internal data center design results in 99.999% availability.
Huawei’s hierarchical design adapts to service growth over the next 5 to 10 years. CNPC can also smoothly scale bandwidth, virtualization, and Data Center Interconnect (DCI).
The solution supports automatic, large-scale deployment and migration of Virtual Machines (VMs), plus all network devices are managed in a unified manner.
