Huawei Secures Supercomputing Network

China set out to create the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen as a part of the country’s research and development program. The goal was to serve Southern China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia with a variety of large-scale scientific and engineering computing capabilities as well as cloud computing services. The center would implement world-class, energy-efficient computing services.


The 43,000 square meter Supercomputing Center required a high-availability network with comprehensive security protection. This high-performance network had to ensure non-congested delivery of supercomputing capabilities to customers while operating with minimal attention from to the center’s staff. At the same time, the O&M personnel in the center needed to have a good understanding of the security system to quickly resolve any issues that requird attention.


After evaluating the security variables at multiple network layers, Huawei provided a security solution encompassing Internet access, network convergence, and service access. Huawei also provided security consultation to ensure that the center’s staff could deal with critical issues.

To guard against Internet security threats, Huawei deployed USG9500 series cloud data center firewalls and SIG9280 series traffic inspection and control equipment. This equipment offers 99.9999 percent availability, 100 Gbits/s processing performance, and Layer-7 anti-DDoS protection to achieve high security without compromising computing performance. Network Intrusion Protection (NIP) systems were also deployed to provide fine-grained traffic monitoring and attack prevention, comprehensively protecting the network from the network layer to the application layer.

The network convergence layer needed both vertical protection (from other network layers) and horizontal protection (from internal equipment) to minimize network security risks. To achieve this protection, Huawei deployed USG9500 series firewalls in two-node clusters in each area of the Supercomputing Center. This architecture prevents security threats from spreading and ensures service continuity with millisecond-level switching of services to alternative links in the event of a problem.

Another method for preventing the spread of security threats is to implement security filtering and detection at the end-points of data streams. Huawei used Terminal Security Management (TSM) systems to protect terminals in the Supercomputing Center by using identity and security checking. The TSM systems provide automation features such as simple deployment and single sign-on, which eliminate the need for terminal users to learn many clumsy security procedures.

In addition to security equipment, Huawei provided security consulting that helps achieve compliance with international information security standards (including ISO 27001 and ISO 17799), laws, and regulations. The consulting service encompasses security system technology, operation, and management.


The Supercomputing Center network safeguards this world-class resource with low-maintenance security technology that helps keep the systems available and user applications protected. The center offers high-performance computing services (1.271 PFLOPS on Linpack benchmarks) for enterprises and scientific research institutions. Huawei’s reliable networking system protects security and supports fast service growth needs.
