The Mombasa Nairobi Railway is the biggest infrastructure project in Kenya since independence. The railway will connect the port of Mombasa to Kenya’s capital city Nairobi. With an estimated cost of USD $3.8 billion, this flagship project under the Kenya Vision 2030 development agenda calls for 472 kilometers of new standard-gauge track for carrying passengers and cargo. The transport capacity will be 25 million tons.
The Mombasa Nairobi Railway communication system is responsible for vehicle scheduling, data transmission, and information communication. Because these communication functions are vital for ensuring railway safety, the system must have a reliable power supply. In particular, the power supply needs to provide stable, reliable power despite unstable grid conditions. A management system is needed to monitor the status of equipment at sites along the railway. The railway project managers want to ensure reliability while minimizing equipment investment and allowing for subsequent expansion.
Huawei is providing an intelligent telecom power solution that includes embedded power, indoor power, Central Office (CO) power, and intelligent site energy management (NetEco) system. These power systems are designed using high-efficiency, high-density rectifier modules; advanced thermal simulation; and strict testing. In this system, monitoring equipments are used in the dispatch center, while signal collectors, switches, and monitoring modules are deployed in railway stations and sites along the railway. The management system can monitor environmental conditions such as room temperature, humidity, smoke, water immersion, as well as monitoring power-related units such as telecom power, UPS, batteries, and air conditioner.
Huawei has simplified power management by integrating signal collection and monitoring functions into a power system. A single management system can manage telecom power, UPS, and related equipment.
