Data Network Leads Bank’s Business Transformation

2013/4/7 16:04:18

ABC is one of four state-owned and comprehensive financial service providers in China, ranked 29 on the Fortune 2016 Global 500. Specifically, ABC operates over 23,600 domestic branches, three branches and four offices overseas, which provide a variety of products and services within retail banking, corporate banking for enterprises and individuals, and its business scope covers financial services, investment banking, fund management, financial leasing, and other banking services.

With continuous expansion of the bank’s business scope and the need for improvement of service quality, ABC plans to establish a new-generation central banking system. This means every that operating branch, which mainly focused on transactional business, will turn to a financial product marketing site over time. Additional multimedia businesses — such as image, voice, and video services — require a higher network bandwidth, better Quality of Service (QoS) control, and increased data security to all the agencies.

The Level-2 (L2) network connecting ABC’s branches plays an important role in supporting the requirements for multimedia businesses. The existing L2 network was built mostly by CPOS or E1 links running in traditional access mode (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, SDH, or Asynchronous Transfer Mode, ATM), which could not meet the above requirements. The following provides the details which needed resolution:

Limited network capacity restricted business expansion

Continuous expansion of different businesses, especially for multimedia services, made it impossible to handle such large amounts of data on the current network, due to its inadequate bandwidth capacity.

Different types of links without uniform standardization

Network links are leased from different local carriers in varying regions, resulting in so many types of links, complicated network architecture and multiple vendors’ technologies. Consequently, it became quite urgent to adopt a unified network link type which can be deployed with standard technologies, in order to reduce maintenance costs.

Equipment from several vendors

The current major network devices are from different vendors with dissimilar performance and technical specifications, which seriously hampered standard network deployment. Therefore, it was necessary to standardize models and brands, finally simplifying operation and maintenance.

To accommodate local carriers’ complicated link resources, Huawei provided unified routers and Local Area Network (LAN) switches to upgrade the existing L2 network. Finally, hundreds of S9300 series LAN switches and Network Element (NE) series routers were deployed to upgrade the L2 network connecting the headquarters and branches. The solution provides several advantages as highlighted below:

High performance enables multiple services with easy expandability

Huawei NE series routers were deployed to converge different city branches networks into the level-1 backbone network. NE series routers provide high-performance and wire-speed forwarding ability, support a variety of IP routing protocols and strategies, offer many different business services, ensure strong protection capabilities, and new business opportunities. The backplane of S9300 series LAN switches ensures good scalability to support the rate of single-port 40 GE, which can smoothly upgrade to 100 GE.

Carrier-grade reliability and security assure ABC’s services are uninterrupted

The key components consisting of Huawei NE series routers and S9300 series LAN switches are designed for redundancy, and all modules support hot-swap and lossless service upgrades (ISSU). NE series routers support IPSec tunnel encryption technology and the built-in centralized firewall cards of S9300 LAN switches support virtual firewall and Network Address Translation (NAT) for multiple instances, ensuring high security of data transmission.

Super capability LAN switch meets higher bandwidth needs

The backplane capability of S9300 series LAN switches is up to 12 Tbit/s, the switching capacity is up to 2 Tbit/s at most, and the maximum bandwidth of single slot is up to 128 Gbit/s. The high-bandwidth capacity eases transmission of large quantities of data generated by voice and video services from ABC.

Huawei helped ABC complete its L2 network upgrades, which greatly supports business expansion and deploys ABC’s new business strategy, offering many benefits:

  • The solution improves the end user experience in personnel financing marketing, increases end user loyalty, and ultimately enhances ABC’s business profitability.
  • High reliable and secure data transmission protects the business from malicious attacks and prevents financial data leakages, which ensures data security and uninterrupted running businesses.
The network upgrades simplify the implementation of a central business system and improves the level of information-sharing, which plays an exemplary role in promoting the whole industry.
