Dubai Iranian Hospital Future-Oriented Campus Network with Huawei WLAN and 10G LAN Switch Solution

Background

Dubai Iranian Hospital was established in 1970 on land donated by his Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum to the Iranian Red Crescent Society. This makes the Dubai Iranian Hospital the first health care provider in Jumeriah region.

The hospital offers a 128 acute inpatient bed facility, a well- equipped 12-bed emergency & trauma care unit, and 10 new VIP units. The hospital also provides subspecialty care for more than 2000 patients daily. The hospital planned an expansion supporting 220 new beds and related facilities.

Key Challenges

As one of the busiest hospitals in Dubai, Dubai Iranian Hospital faced large pressure due to its limited resources. Thus the hospital planned to make an expansion of its existing facilities to improve its bed capability from 128 to 348. The hospital extension required a comprehensive network to support the service for not only medical care services but also voice, CCTV, and other IT systems. These services require a future-oriented, broadband and reliable network infrastructure.

The major challenges for the network infrastructure are:

  • High reliability for multi-service support

The campus network is the infrastructure for hospital, security and, office systems. Failure of the campus network will affect all these systems and compromise the services to patients. So reliability is critical for the hospital campus network.

  • High bandwidth for future service expansion

In recent years medical care IT systems are improving really quickly, which has placed a growing requirement on bandwidth in order to share medical data and provide better service to patients.

  • Unified management the whole campus network

The campus network includes switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless LAN. A unified management system will reduce maintenance costs.

Solution Highlights

To resolve these challenges for Dubai Iranian Hospital, Huawei offered a highly reliable, state of the art campus network solution. The solution includes S-series core and access switches, firewall, eSight unified network management system, and WLAN. The system has the following advantages:

  • High reliability by using iStack in access layer and CSS in core layer

The access switches use intelligent stacking (iStack) to virtualize multiple devices into one logical device for easy management and operation. Compared with a single device, iStack features higher scalability, reliability, performance, and a better architecture. The S7700 core switches implement CSS function through switch fabrics, and packets are only switched once when they are forwarded between chassis. Clustering provides the industry’s highest cluster bandwidth of 256 Gigabit/s. Inter-chassis link aggregation can be used to improve link use efficiency and prevent single-point failures.

  • 10G uplink ports support future service expansion

The access switches provide GE access and 10GE uplink ports, which can meet growing bandwidth requirements from hospital applications within next 5-10 years.

  • eSight unified management system reduces maintenance costs

eSight is a next-generation network management solution that allows enterprise users to centrally manage the basic network, unified communications (UC), telepresence meetings, video surveillance devices, and data centers. The system is used to monitor wired and wireless LAN systems, as well as firewalls.
