Supporting Future Product Expansion, Sberbank Serbia Retools IT Systems with Huawei Storage

3 Min Read

Banks need to handle and store ever-increasing amounts of data. With its new storage system in place, Sberbank Serbia can now easily handle such rapid data growth, boosting operational efficiency.

A part of the Sberbank Group — one of the world's largest, fastest-growing, and most dynamic financial institutions — universal commercial bank Sberbank Serbia has more than 170,000 clients and over 700 employees.

Offering a growing portfolio of services, the bank's vision is to become the first choice for day-to-day customer business, as well as be a unique partner, one building bridges between companies in Serbia, Russia, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Sberbank Serbia believes that this can be achieved by integrating cutting-edge technology into its services and processes, all while improving the functionality and reliability of existing Information Technology (IT) systems, in order to transfer the entire business to a new digital platform.

Transforming IT Systems to Support the Launch of New, In-Demand Products and Services

Some years ago, Sberbank Serbia began its project to digitalize processes in order to deliver ever higher quality, more convenient, and more competitive services, both online and off: one of the first banks operating in the Serbian market to provide 100% digital loans, it also introduced mobile payments, using Quick Response (QR) codes, in 2020.

Today, with further product range expansions planned in the near future, maintaining business continuity is crucial. Of course, data security, storage, and protection are always key priorities and handling growing volumes of customer data naturally requires an ultra-robust, ultra-reliable storage system. So the bank began the search for a new storage solution.

Generally speaking, for any financial institution, such a solution must be simple to own, operate, and maintain. Smooth data migration from legacy storage must also be supported. Sberbank Serbia demanded the highest levels of reliability and availability of customer data, too, in order to boost digital banking services and secure its market position.

Innovative Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage Is a Natural Fit for the Finance Industry

The joint success story of Sberbank Serbia and Huawei actually began in 2017 when the bank purchased two Huawei OceanStor flash storage systems. These proved to be a great match for the bank's mission-critical business, delivering the high performance, reliability, and business continuity required.

Some four years later, in order to support the development of the bank's main applications and services, it sought out an upgrade. In 2021, the bank undertook a detailed analysis of its legacy storage system and collected precise storage requirements regarding space, performance, and functionality. A Huawei solution met all of the bank's requirements.

After several rounds of bidding, Huawei and its partner emerged successful and began to deploy an upgraded Huawei OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage system at the bank's primary site. Huawei OceanStor Dorado features intelligent acceleration, designed to meet the demands of core enterprise services, and delivers excellent functionality, performance, efficiency, reliability, and ease of use.

Indeed, since migrating to a Huawei platform back in 2017, its revenues have grown by more than 60%, with zero operational interruptions.

Improving Business Continuity and Performance to Factor in Future Product Range Expansion

Undertaken by Huawei's partner, storage implementation and data migration across two physical sites proceeded smoothly, without interrupting business operations. "The partner's knowledge of Huawei's storage systems, as well as the process of data migration, gave us great confidence," said Miloš Nedeljković, a member of the Executive Board of Sberbank Serbia. In total, implementation and migration took less than three weeks to complete, with most work conducted during weekends, when data traffic dips.

The bank achieved its main goals of ensuring business continuity and implementing a new solution characterized by its ease of maintenance. Around the clock data availability — anytime, anywhere — frees the bank to build its future with confidence. Indeed, since migrating to a Huawei platform back in 2017, its revenues have grown by more than 60%, with zero operational interruptions.

In addition, the bank's client base has grown by a factor of three, with expansion in every segment, all backed up by a secure storage solution that has helped the bank develop ever stronger relationships with both new and existing clients, raising customer satisfaction.

Endowed with sufficient storage space to roll out new applications, Sberbank Serbia's marketing team is now actively planning to execute a range of new marketing campaigns, develop new products, and launch innovative digital services. Moving further forward with its digitalization in this way, the bank will continue to offer its customers the best services possible, online and off.
