World’s First LTE Metro Line

Zhengzhou, with a population of over 10 million, is the capital of Henan province and a major transportation hub in Central China. Zhengzhou Metro has 6 lines covering over 200 km and plays an important part in relieving the city’s traffic congestion.

To improve traffic conditions, ensure travel safety, enrich passenger experience, and build Zhengzhou Metro into the world’s first-class urban railway transport system, Zhengzhou Metro Company has been seeking a first-class communications system.  The new system would provide high-speed mobility, wide bandwidth, short delays, and strong scalability to fulfill communication demands now and into the future. The traditional Passenger Information System (PIS) records data or transmits data through a WLAN. However, data recording does not deliver real-time services and, therefore, cannot fully utilize the PIS’s advantages. With the increasing popularity of WiFi, PIS stability becomes a problem, especially for mobile applications where intermittent interruptions occur. Furthermore, due to limited uplink capacity for traditional wireless solutions, vehicle-mounted video surveillance can only record local data, and real-time videos cannot be captured by the command center. Under such circumstances, Zhengzhou Metro decided to implement the Huawei eLTE solution to provide ground-to-train wireless broadband services across Zhengzhou Metro Line 1, with speeds up to 120 km per hour, for services such as vehicle-mounted PIS applications, video surveillance, and fire warnings.

The Huawei eLTE solution provides a downlink bandwidth of about 20 Mbit/s for a single train, with flexible subframe configuration, and large uplink bandwidth in the case of limited frequencies, enabling the requirements of vehicle-mounted HD video surveillance. In addition, QoS mechanisms provide accurate priority management of services to minimize transmission delay, packet loss rate, and guarantee bandwidth demand for key services when the network is congested. The eLTE solution supports PIS and video surveillance services in one system to reduce network investment and pave the way in the future for Communication Based Train Control functions and trunking dispatch. With this solution, coverage of a single cell extends to 1,200m, significantly reducing equipment quantity, and improving O&M efficiency.

On November 29, 2013, Zhengzhou Metro powered up the world’s first eLTE urban metro solution, which gained wide recognition throughout the industry. This project lays a solid foundation for integrating metro resources, saving construction costs, and enhancing metro O&M efficiency.
